Job Summary

Plan, lay-out, install, test, repair, or maintain high voltage substation wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, motors, forms, rebar, embeds and anchor bolts, equipment and control systems in generating stations, substations, and in‑service relays in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Use appropriate hand and power tools to properly measure, cut, assemble and install electrical conduits, cable and duct banks. Hand dig ditches and holes. Install control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays and circuit‑breaker panels and install grounding leads and pull wire through conduit. Work with high and low voltage systems, test continuity of circuits, and rig and set large high voltage equipment.
  • Operate machinery including up to a 30‑ton truck crane, mini excavator, skid steer, aerial man lift, forklift and trenching equipment as required for live substation work up to 500,000 volts.
  • Execute all safety‑related processes and programs, including lock‑out/tag‑out procedures, headerless behavior, and use of stop‑work authority when hazards arise.
  • Attend site‑specific training, maintain a safe and clean work environment, and communicate effectively with co‑workers and supervisors.
  • Provide on‑the‑job training/mentoring to helpers and laborers, produce quality work, and read and understand plans and specifications including one‑line diagrams, cable and conduit schedules, ladder diagrams, P&’s and loop diagrams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • OSHA approved crane operations certification (e.g., NCCCO or CIC Certification). NCCER certifications in Electrician, Carpenter, Concrete Finisher, Heavy Equipment Operations, or Rigging.
Minimum Qualifications

At least 4 years of experience as a Substation Helper or equivalent education/experience in an industrial construction setting. Must have strong knowledge of high‑voltage electrical and civil industry standards, substation components, auto‑leveling, transit for accurate layout, steel‑framed form fabrication, rebar tying techniques, concrete placement, and substation testing and maintenance. Must be at least 18 years old, possess all necessary tools, and complete required pre‑employment background checks, drug screening, and motor‑vehicle record searches.

Certifications

OSHA approved crane operations certification (e.g., NCCCO or CIC Certification). NCCER certifications in Electrician, Carpenter, Concrete Finisher, Heavy Equipment Operations, or Rigging.

Work Environment/Physical Demands
  • Lift and carry items up to 50 lb.
  • Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, and move in confined and cluttered spaces.
  • Maintain full range of motion and flexibility.
  • Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects and tools.
  • Perform repetitive movements.
  • Climb and maintain balance on steel frameworks, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds.
  • Work up to 12‑hour shifts in varying temperature extremes.
  • Work in cramped spaces and awkward positions.
  • Exposed to temperatures above 90 °F or below 32 °F, dust, wind, snow, rain, and bright or inadequate lighting.
  • Experience sounds and noise levels that may be distracting or uncomfortable.
  • Work around hazardous equipment.
  • Position is safety‑sensitive.
