Family engagement is a critical component of school improvement, Title I schools are required to provide for family engagement in their quest to include parents and families as teachers, learners, decision makers, and advocates for improved student achievement.

In accordance with the site-based decision-making process, Title I schools design and implement family engagement models that serve to connect the school, family, and community. All family engagement strategies must directly correlate with school improvement goals and objectives that serve to improve student achievement, promote attendance, increase parental involvement, and decrease delinquency.

All Title I schools must engage in parent/family outreach and implement strategies for family engagement which include designating a family engagement contact person and/or facilitator. Family engagement may be a combined effort by way of school improvement teams; home/school correlate teams, designated staff, and/or school volunteer programs. Family engagement programs may also utilize the assistance of the school PTO as well as other outside community resources.

Program accountability is required. Schools analyze family engagement accomplishments and student achievement results in preparation for improved family engagement progress goals and maintain evidence of family engagement activities.

Role of Parent Facilitator/Liaison

The role of the parent facilitator, parent/family contact person, or family engagement team is one of leadership which serves to actively involve all parents, families, and community stakeholders in the education of our children. While the focus from one school to another may vary in degree, parent facilitation responsibilities in Title I schools include but are not limited to the following:

• Providing a means of communication to and from school on a regular basis
• Encouraging communication among parents/families and the surrounding community on educational issues
• Soliciting parental/family involvement in the school decision-making process
• Recruiting volunteers and Recruiting Tutors
• Increasing parent/family participation in the educational process
• Encouraging parents/families to respond to school requests on matters involving parental/family support
• Developing materials and strategies for parents and families to use to assist students
• Other duties assigned by the administrator that assist with the safe and orderly operation of the school
