Purpose of Position

Under general supervision, protects and serves the citizens of the City of Clinton by responding to specialized ?re, medical, and rescue operations, as well as other calls for service included in the fire education programs. Drives, operates, and maintains firefighting and rescue apparatus and equipment. Participates in public relations events and performs related work as assigned.

Essential Job Functions
  • Firefighter Essential Functions
  • May drive, operate, and maintain ?refighting apparatus and equipment on an assigned basis; operate pumps; use ladders, axes, shovels, and other ?re fighting equipment. Responds to automobile accidents, rescue calls, administering emergency medical aid to victims as required.
  • Responds to ?re alarms; locates and extinguishes minor fires with suppression equipment in patrol car; helps to lay and connect hose; operates hose nozzles and directs fog and water streams; participates in rescue and salvage operations; cleans and prepares ?re ?ghting equipment for re-entry service; assists in conducting ?re inspections.
  • Must possess and maintain the mental and physical conditioning to successfully perform the essential functions of the position for which they are employed and trained.
  • Must be able to successfully pass an NFPA firefighter physical and other skill, mental, and physical testing as required.
  • Responds to fire alarms as a firefighter for various types of fire and other emergency calls for service.
  • May assist in conducting major and minor fire-cause investigations and preliminary investigations at the scenes of fires; administers first-aid to persons; may appear as a witness in court for fire-related and/or arson charges.
  • Participates in a continuing program of training and instruction and attendance at scheduled drills and classes.
  • Performs assignments and instructions in accordance with Departmental rules and regulations, which are provided in general terms by a superior officer who reviews work methods and results through reports, observations, and discussions.
  • Provides assistance to other agencies as needed.
  • May direct traf?c as required at emergency scenes or other non-emergency traf?c during special events such as parades and festivals.
  • Receives, reviews, and processes various reports and records, including vehicle maintenance records, pre-fire plans, etc. Prepares and processes incident reports, wreck reports, personal training reports, fire reports, and related documents.
  • Operates, utilizes, and maintains a variety of firefighting and communication equipment and tools, including fire apparatus, radios, cameras, computers/tablets, fire trucks, rescue trucks, firehouses, air packs, etc.
  • Must be a team player and supportive of team concepts for success, overall objectives, and shift stability.
  • Firefighter Support Functions
  • Performs various support functions, including confined space entry/rescue for other agencies and city departments.
  • Provides fire, medical, and rescue support to special events as needed.
  • Performs related work as needed and is willing to perform assigned tasks.
  • May be subject to night, weekend, and holiday work.
  • May be subject to emergency situation recall.
  • Maintain proficiency in all aspects of firefighting training as required; attend routine and regular firefighting training and recertification courses/training as required or requested.
