Field/Service Technician
Under limited supervision, the Utility Billing Field Service Technician I performs field and customer service duties related to reading, inspecting, maintaining, and monitoring water and electrical meters. This position is responsible for accurately collecting usage data, supporting billing operations, performing service connections and disconnections, and assisting customers with utility-related concerns.
The position requires participation in a scheduled on-call rotation and the ability to respond to emergencies as required.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe following duties are representative of the work performed and are not intended to be all-inclusive. Additional duties may be assigned as operational needs require.
Field OperationsOperates a City-owned vehicle to read water and electrical meters along assigned routes and accurately records usage data using hand-held electronic equipment.
Inspects and identifies damaged or defective meters and performs repairs or replacements as appropriate and within assigned responsibilities.
Monitors and reports irregular or unusual water and electrical usage.
Identifies suspected utility theft, prepares reports, and participates in investigations and legal proceedings as required.
Performs service functions, including turning water services on and off and disconnecting and reconnecting electrical meters, in accordance with established procedures, training, authorization, and applicable safety requirements.
Uses required personal protective equipment (PPE) and follows established safety procedures when performing field activities.
Responds to customer inquiries and service requests in person, by telephone, or electronically.
Explains City policies, procedures, and billing practices related to utility services.
Assists Utility Billing staff with routine and specialized customer service functions.
Addresses customer complaints and works to resolve issues or refers matters to appropriate personnel when necessary.
Operates assigned City vehicles in accordance with City policies and applicable laws and regulations.
Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment, including cleaning, fueling, and reporting maintenance or repair needs.
Operates tools and equipment, including hand-held electronic devices, diagnostic instruments, hand tools, and office equipment.
Assists with meter data entry and helps ensure timely and accurate billing information.
Performs mailroom and courier duties as needed.
Assists with utility surveys, load control, and census-related activities.
Provides operational support to other City departments as assigned.
Adheres to City policies and applicable federal, state, and local safety and environmental laws, regulations, and procedures.
Utilizes required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Maintains a clean, safe, and orderly work environment.
Complies with established safety requirements as a condition of employment.
Maintains prompt and regular attendance in accordance with City policies.
Participates in the scheduled on-call rotation and responds to emergencies as required.
Attends required meetings, training sessions, and planning activities.
Demonstrates professionalism, teamwork, accountability, and a willingness to accept supervision, instruction, and feedback.
