Overview
Maintenance Tech I position is a role that can be assigned to any of the following jobs at the manufacturing plant:
Electrician, Machinist, Mechanic, and Boiler Operator. The primary function is to rotate between different jobs as business needs dictate. Required training will be provided before placement in a role.
Machinist
- The primary function is to fabricate, design, and redesign parts and repair parts for all machinery in the plant.
- Assigned to the machine shop.
- Capable of operating all machine type equipment (lathes, drill press, grinders, mills, and saws).
- Design and redesign parts for shop machining; repair and modify molds and hardware.
- Fabricate parts.
- Repair parts for the shop machinery.
- Perform welding as needed.
- Complete necessary paperwork on each job order.
Electrician
- Test, install, program, assemble, and maintain electronic equipment and components of processing operations in the plant.
- Familiar with the function and purpose of all electrical devices used within the plant.
- Assist in the repair and/or replacement of mechanical equipment.
- Familiar with the National Electric Code Handbook.
- Install, troubleshoot, and program computers used in processing operations.
- Capable of operating shop machinery.
- Use electrical test equipment.
- Repair/replace and install components of electric devices.
- Perform basic troubleshooting on electrical equipment.
- Understand/troubleshoot electrical/electronic control systems.
- Fabricate and install conduit systems.
- Perform electronic maintenance on motors and controls.
Boiler Operator
- Maintain steam pressure, air pressure, and hydraulic pressure needed to correctly cure tires, heat oil, and heat the plant; operate plant equipment.
- Check log book daily for possible problems to rectify.
- Check compressors; add lubrication oil and check crank case level.
- Operate air dryer and air bundle as needed.
- Check temperatures of the air compressor and cooling water level.
- Check lubricators to ensure operation.
- Inspect boiler: blow water columns, bottom blow to remove sediment; record results.
- Perform chemical tests and check conductivity of boiler water.
- Add chemicals as needed.
- Check pumps and monitor gauges.
Mechanic
- Provide mechanical work, maintenance, rebuild services, and ongoing repairs to various machines in the plant.
- Identify daily assignments to machines with mechanical issues.
- Responsible for overall repair and/or rebuild of shop machines.
- Log machine downtime with clock number and log the machine back in when finished.
- Rebuild parts and machines as needed; floor coverage for day-to-day maintenance.
- Preventive/Predictive Maintenance (PM) procedures.
- Assist with electrical work and understand/repair electrical components of machines and plants.
- Must pass an in-house mechanical examination with a score of 70% or better.
Education, Experience and
Skills Required:
- High School diploma/GED required, or commit to obtain a GED with Carlstar-sponsored GED program within 12 months of hire date
- CERTIFICATION as a Forklift Operator
- Three to five years of industrial experience
- Minimum of 1 year in a manufacturing/distribution operation preferred
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while meeting production and quality goals
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid forklift or equipment license as needed or required
Physical Requirements
- Must meet the ergonomic and physical base requirements for this position.
- Must pass company tests: agility and drug.
- Exerting 200 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 75 lbs. frequently and/or in excess of 30 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
- Stand 90% and walk 10% of a normal day.
- Lift/Carry 25 lbs. to 100 lbs.
- Any lifting over 70 lbs. must be done with assistance (mechanical or another person).
- Push/pull: 50 lb constantly, up to 250 lb occasionally.
- Pinch: minimum 12 lbs. Grasp: minimum 125 lbs.
- Full range of motion required: cervical, shoulders, elbow, wrist, fingers, hands, trunk twist, and feet.
- Working Conditions:
Inside and outside, extreme heat and cold, moderate noise, moderate vibrations, wet, humidity, moving mechanical parts, electric shock, chemicals, height, explosives, burns, odors, dust, stairs, handrails, slick floors, protrusions, narrow access.
