JOB SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, or Aquatic Facilities Manager, this position provides instruction for learn-to-swim classes in a safe and effective manner. The instructor is responsible for delivering appropriate class activities for all participant levels in accordance with safety recommendations from the City of Clive and the American Red Cross. The instructor is also responsible for communication with participants and their parents, and for relaying all pertinent information to the Recreation Coordinator or Aquatic Facilities Manager.

JOB FUNCTIONS

Examples of Essential Job Functions
  • Ensure the safety of all course participants through alertness and firm, yet courteous enforcement of pool rules while instructing.
  • Be familiar with the locations of safety equipment and the facility's emergency action plans and understand how both are administered.
  • Attend all required staff trainings and meetings.
  • Instruct appropriate skills for participants of all ages based on their progress levels.
  • Follow safety guidelines recommended by the City of Clive and the American Red Cross.
  • Provide skill modifications for participants that need them.
  • Complete the assigned duties of the position and other duties as apparent or assigned.
Other Job Functions
  • Maintain a strong knowledge of the swimming progression levels, the appropriate skills taught in each level.
  • Teach skills and skill segments correctly and in a manner that may be understood by the participant.
  • To be familiar with all locations of safety equipment and emergency action plans and how both are administered.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to think logically and follow written, verbal, or diagrammatic instructions using several abstract or concrete variables.
  • Ability to follow instructions and directives accurately.
  • Knowledge of the facility and the safety procedures used.
  • Knowledge of general lifeguard practices.
  • Knowledge of general swimming instruction practices.
  • Ability to work effectively with participants of all ages.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, co-workers, and the public
  • Ability to tactfully handle a wide array of social situations.
  • Ability to perform all job duties safely and in accordance with applicable rules, guidelines, policies, and training.
Education, Training, and Experience
Education Required Enrollment in high school or higher education.
Must hold current Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification.

Experience Desired Experience working in recreation facilities or programs.
Current Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR certifications are recommended.
Experience working with children is recommended.

Qualifications
  • Must be at least 16 of age.
  • Must have, and be able to demonstrate, knowledge of proper swimming instruction techniques.
  • Must have, and be able to demonstrate, knowledge of water safety and lifeguard practices.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIROMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS
Required Physical Activities
Sitting, standing, kneeling, reaching, climbing, walking, finger dexterity, talking, watching, hearing, repetitive motions, periods of elevated heart rate, and exercise.

Physical Characteristics of the Job
Moderate Physical Demand:
Work that involves lifting up to fifty (50) pounds occasionally and up to twenty-five (25) pounds on a frequent basis.
Environmental Characteristics
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, with seasonal exposure to heat and cold. The position may involve exposure to unpleasant social situations, a fast-paced work environment, and irregular work hours.
Equipment and materials used
Thermometers; general office equipment; SDS documentation; personnel policies; calculator; telephone; radio; PA system; rescue tubes; backboards; kickboards; floatation aids; class record sheets; and lockers.
