The Closter School District is seeking a dedicated and skilled Basic Skills Teacher to support the academic growth of elementary students. The successful candidate will assess academic deficiencies, plan and deliver targeted remedial instruction in reading, writing, and mathematics, and collaborate with staff and families to help each student achieve their full potential.
Key Responsibilities
• Identify students with academic deficiencies through evaluation of test data, staff consultation, and referrals
• Develop individualized instructional goals and deliver small group and individualized remedial instruction in reading, writing, and mathematics
• Assess student progress regularly and maintain accurate records of academic growth
• Collaborate with classroom teachers, administrators, and parents to support student success
• Select and use appropriate instructional materials, technology, and strategies aligned with NJ Student Learning Standards
Qualifications
• Valid New Jersey Instructional Certificate with Elementary Education endorsement or eligibility, or alternative route certification in accordance with State law
• Demonstrated knowledge of effective, research-based teaching methods and developmentally appropriate instructional practices
• Orton-Gillingham certification preferred
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status
• Current New Jersey residency, approved waiver, or agreement to establish residency within one year of employment
Terms of Employment
This is a ten-month, tenure-track position with a start date of September 1, 2026. New Hire Orientation will take place the week of August 24, 2026. Salary and benefits are established per the Agreement between the Closter Board of Education and the Closter Education Association. Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with New Jersey State law. This position is covered under the Closter Education Association and Closter Board of Education Collective Bargaining Agreement ).
The salary range for this position is $57,904 to $86,371, commensurate with degree and graduate credits as outlined in the negotiated salary guide. This salary range considers the applicant's experience, qualifications, and skill sets. This Position includes a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, prescription, and dental coverage, tuition reimbursement, and sick and personal leave.
