Position: Engineering Student Assistant - Technician/Field Work (Clovis, CA)

Job Overview

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking a student assistant to assist in performing a variety of land surveying tasks in an office setting, in a learning capacity, under the close supervision of a Senior Transportation Surveyor. By performing these tasks the student assistant will gain a breadth of exposure to Land Surveying.

Requirements

Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list. Students must be enrolled in at least six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students. Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.

of Employment

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment is at-will. A pre-employment background check may be conducted, involving employment history, professional references, criminal check, educational verification, or DMV clearance. Applicants must pass the required checks. UEI does not allow students to hold more than one UEI job at a time, or work in more than one account per pay period.

Students must reside in California; all work must be performed in California.

Majors/Fields of Study

Geomatics and/or Engineering.

Work Schedule

Flexible workdays and hours, Monday–Friday, between 8 AM–5 PM. Final schedule determined by supervisor. Students and graduate assistants generally work up to 24 hours per week during academic year and up to 40 hours per week during breaks.

Compensation

$18.28 – $28.16 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
  • Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for undergraduate and graduate classifications.
  • Must have a valid CA Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in preparing various types of Right-of-way maps using CAD software.
  • Assist in operating Total Station Survey System, GPS Survey System, digital level and associated software to collect survey data.
  • Assist in processing and analyzing survey data to assure accuracy and completeness before delivering data to the Surveys office.
  • Assist in posting recorded deed data to R/W Record Maps.
  • Assist in scanning maps and documents for project archiving and indexing scanned files for entry to GIS and databases.
  • Help take survey notes, including making diagrams of the survey site.
  • Assist in interpreting construction plans for highway projects and perform routine calculations to compile a field package for a survey crew to do construction staking.
  • Assist in writing or reviewing legal descriptions used in deeds to acquire or dispose of State highway R/W.
  • Assist in researching survey control data, corner records and recorded maps to compile field packages for survey crews to perform field work.
Physical Requirements

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.

Working Conditions

Work performed in an office (50%) and in field (50%) environment. Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and uneven terrain. May require occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, or climbing as part of field duties.
