Position: Police Officer Recruit/Lateral

Paid Incentives

$10,000 Bonus Incentive available for positions hired in the Police Officer Recruit & Police Officer Lateral class.

Salary

Police Officer Recruit: $42.39–51.53 per hour, $7,348–8,931 monthly, $88,176–107,172 annually

Police Officer Lateral: $50.89–61.86 per hour, $8,821–10,722 monthly, $105,852–128,664 annually

Job Summary

Under general supervision, on a regular or assigned shift, perform general police work in the prevention of crime and the enforcement of law and order; work closely with the community to preserve the peace and promote public safety; perform traffic enforcement and control; carry out special assignments in specialized phases of police work; and perform related work as required.

Class Characteristics

Police Officer Recruit – Entry‑level sworn officer with minimal to no prior experience. Incumbents train with a field training officer, may drive a police vehicle, and respond to emergencies as assigned.

Police Officer Lateral – Requires a Basic POST Certificate and two years of peace‑officer experience. Incumbents perform patrol duties, investigations, community policing, traffic control, arrest, and related responsibilities.

Responsibilities
  • Patrol assigned areas by vehicle, foot, or motorcycle.
  • Respond to calls for protection of life and property.
  • Conduct initial and follow‑up investigations.
  • Promote community policing, public safety, and improve police‑community relations.
  • Communicate with merchants about potential problems and educate citizens on laws and rights.
  • Perform public outreach and support community‑oriented policing principles.
  • Organize and participate in community events, public education programs, and meetings.
  • Develop, enforce, and control traffic; conduct traffic stops; warn drivers; make arrests; testify in court.
  • Serve warrants and subpoenas; administer first aid in emergencies.
  • Answer complaints related to civil disturbances, animal issues, health code, and local ordinance violations.
  • Investigate suspicious circumstances and perform property security checks.
  • Take custody of lost and found property; perform crowd control, parade, or riot work.
  • Take crime‑prevention measures and assist in controlling juvenile delinquency.
  • Book arrestees in jail, assist in their custody, care, and welfare; transport arrestees.
  • Receive telephone calls and dispatch emergency vehicles and personnel per department policy.
  • Provide superior protection and service; furnish information and directions to the public.
  • Attend briefings, read briefing materials, and submit written reports of assigned cases.
  • Participate in training courses and programs.
  • Operate two‑way radio, recorders, firearms, and other law‑enforcement equipment.
  • May relieve a superior officer during absence or as assigned.
  • Provide ethical leadership, uphold standards, and promote the organization’s vision and goals.
  • Operate city vehicles and perform related work as required.
Licenses and Certificates
  • Valid California Driver’s License with a good driving record.
  • Basic Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certificate.
Education and Experience

Police Officer Recruit – High school diploma or equivalent; no experience required.

Police Officer Lateral – High school diploma or equivalent; two years of sworn law‑enforcement experience.

Post Peace Officer Requirements

Must comply with all POST California Peace Officer minimum selection standards.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions
  • Environment: Office, outdoor, and driving environments; reactive emergency, natural or man‑made disaster, routine peace‑keeping; exposure to cold, hot, inclement weather, confined spaces, life‑threatening situations, public contact, moderate to loud noise, hazardous substances and fumes.
  • Physical fitness: Ability to bend, twist, turn, stoop, squat, kneel, climb, crawl, sit, stand, and walk for prolonged periods; wear a ballistic vest and duty belt with weighted equipment.
  • Strength: Ability to lift, carry, and/or push up to 100 pounds, with frequent lifting/carrying of up to 50 pounds.
  • Vision: Corrected to 20/20 in one eye and 20/30 in the other; frequent reading and identification of suspects; maintain firearms qualification.
