Police Officer Recruit: $42.39–$51.53 per hour; $7,348.00–$8,931.00 per month; $88,176.00–$ annually.
Police Officer Lateral: $50.89–$61.86 per hour; $8,821.00–$10,722.00 per month; $–$ annually.

Definitions and Class CharacteristicsDefinition: Under general supervision, perform general police work to prevent crime and enforce laws; engage with the community to promote public safety; conduct traffic enforcement; perform special assignments; and perform related work as required.
Police Officer Recruit: Entry-level sworn officer with minimal to no prior experience. Training with a field training officer; may drive police vehicle; may be assigned to special details; may be required to establish order in emergencies.
Police Officer Lateral: Distinguished by POST Basic Certificate and two years of sworn peace officer experience. May drive police vehicle; may be assigned to special details; may be required to establish order in emergencies.
Examples of DutiesPatrol assigned areas by car, foot, or motorcycle; respond to calls to protect life and property; conduct investigations; engage with the community and other City departments to promote community policing; educate the public on laws and rights; conduct traffic enforcement and stops; issue warnings, make arrests, testify in court; administer first aid in emergencies; handle civil disturbances; perform crowd control and riot work;
transport arrestees; operate radios, firearms, and related equipment; perform related duties as required.
POLICE OFFICER RECRUIT
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATES REQUIRED
- Possession of a valid California Driver’s License and a good driving record.
- Possession of California POST Regular Basic Course Police Academy Certificate (or documented acceptance/enrollment with a POST Academy within specified windows).
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
None required.
POLICE OFFICER LATERAL
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATES REQUIRED
- Possession of a valid California Driver’s License and a good driving record.
- Possession of Basic POST Certificate.
Out-of-State Lateral Applicants:
Applications may be accepted provisionally if enrolled with a California POST-certified academy to obtain the California POST Certificate.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
Two (2) years of experience as a sworn law enforcement officer.
POST REQUIREMENTS
- Must comply with all POST California Peace Officer minimum selection standards.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
- Environment:
Office, outdoor, and driving environments; subject to extreme conditions, travel, varied weather, loud environments, and exposure to hazards. - Physical fitness:
Ability to perform demanding physical tasks and wear protective gear. - Strength:
Ability to lift up to 100 pounds maximum; frequently lift or carry objects up to 50 pounds. - Vision:
Corrected vision required; ability to read and observe; firearms qualification maintained. - Hearing/Speech:
Adequate hearing and speech to communicate in loud environments and over radios. - Dexterity:
Use of computer, vehicle operation, and police equipment. - Working conditions:
May require overtime, rotating shifts, evenings, weekends, holidays; may require firearms training and qualification.
