Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Automotive Technician

The current vacancy is for the night shift position with hours from 2:00 PM to 10:30 PM.
DEFINITIONUnder close supervision, to service diesel and gasoline-powered equipment; and to perform related work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICSPositions in this class perform unskilled and limited semi-skilled work in the service, maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline-powered equipment under supervision and may, under immediate supervision or as an assistant, perform skilled repair and maintenance work in a training capacity. At this level, repair and maintenance work typically includes cleaning equipment, changing tires, lubrication, minor body and fender work, routine preventive maintenance and minor repairs, replacements and adjustments.
Positions in this class perform work which is highly structured, which seldom varies, and which is performed in accordance with established instructions. Incumbents receive thorough instructions when tasks are initially assigned and after training are expected to perform duties without constant supervision. Work is reviewed periodically upon completion and while in progress. Incumbents are expected to refer most variations in work to supervisor for instructions.
- Inspects and services diesel and gasoline-powered equipment; lubricates automobiles, trucks and other motorized equipment; operates motorized equipment in connection with repair and servicing;
- Changes and repairs tires; cleans, washes and polishes motor equipment;
- Makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and assists on major repairs;
- Obtains equipment parts; steam cleans refuse trucks; fuels refuse trucks; checks undercarriage of trucks for damage; replaces work tires;
- Performs minor body and fender work; cleans upholstery and headlining; cleans and maintains work areas, hand tools and equipment;
- Requisition s supplies and parts; operates City vehicles; and performs related work as required.
- Possession of a valid California Driver's License and a good driving record.
- Education: Completion of formal or informal education to assure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance.
- Experience: Two (2) years of recent experience involving the servicing or performance of minor mechanical maintenance of automotive or other power-driven equipment. Technical College degree or AA degree may substitute for up to two (2) years experience.

Work experience with arc or gas welding equipment. - Advancement: Persons hired in this classification will be required to possess or obtain certification by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in no less than three areas as a condition of advancement within the classification salary range.
- Knowledge of: Methods, materials, tools, and equipment employed in the service and repair of diesel and gasoline-powered equipment; common lubricants and their applications; provisions of the California Vehicle Code applying to the operation of vehicles on the highway; appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
- Ability to: Demonstrate mechanical aptitude; use a variety of tools and equipment with skill and safety; care for and maintain tools; meet approved minimal physical and medical standards; demonstrate physical endurance, agility, and strength necessary to perform heavy manual labor; use tools and equipment of the automotive repair trade safely; operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices; read, understand and apply moderately difficult materials;
understand and carry out oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Strength:
Medium work lifting, carrying and/or pushing 50 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
