Asphalt Superintendent

Position Summary

The Asphalt Superintendent is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing all phases of asphalt paving operations on commercial, municipal, roadway, highway, and site development projects. This position manages field crews, subcontractors, equipment, materials, quality control, safety compliance, and project schedules to ensure projects are completed safely, on time, within budget, and according to contract specifications.

Key Responsibilities Project Management & Field Operations
  • Direct and supervise asphalt paving crews, foremen, equipment operators, and subcontractors.
  • Plan daily and weekly paving activities to meet production goals and project schedules.
  • Coordinate asphalt paving, milling, grading, preparation, striping, and related roadway construction activities.
  • Review project plans, specifications, schedules, and contract requirements.
  • Monitor project progress and adjust manpower, equipment, and resources as needed.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, inspectors, utility companies, and clients.
Crew Leadership
  • Lead and mentor field personnel to maximize productivity and maintain high-quality workmanship.
  • Conduct daily safety meetings and jobsite briefings.
  • Assign responsibilities and monitor crew performance.
  • Assist with hiring, training, and workforce development initiatives.
Quality Control
  • Ensure asphalt placement, compaction, thickness, and surface tolerances meet project specifications.
  • Monitor mix temperatures, paving operations, rolling patterns, and quality standards.
  • Coordinate testing and inspections with quality control personnel and project owners.
  • Identify and resolve field issues that could impact project quality.
Safety & Compliance
  • Enforce OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
  • Conduct regular jobsite safety inspections and hazard assessments.
  • Ensure proper traffic control measures are implemented and maintained.
  • Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions when necessary.
Equipment & Materials Management
  • Coordinate equipment utilization and maintenance schedules.
  • Monitor material deliveries and production rates.
  • Ensure proper allocation of labor, equipment, and materials to maximize efficiency.
  • Track production quantities and maintain daily reports.
Financial Responsibilities
  • Assist with project budgeting and cost control.
  • Monitor labor, equipment, and material costs.
  • Identify potential change orders and document additional work.
  • Support project managers in maintaining profitability goals.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; construction management or related education preferred.
  • 5+ years of asphalt paving experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
  • Strong knowledge of asphalt paving, milling, grading, roadway construction, and site development.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and schedules.
  • Experience managing multiple crews and subcontractors.
  • Knowledge of DOT, municipal, and commercial paving standards.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with GPS machine control, grade checking, and construction software is preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred.
Preferred Experience
  • Highway and roadway reconstruction projects.
  • DOT, municipal, airport, or heavy civil construction projects.
  • Asphalt plant operations and production coordination.
  • Traffic control and MOT (Maintenance of Traffic) operations.
  • Large-scale paving projects exceeding $1 million.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk uneven terrain and active construction sites.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends, and travel as required by project schedules.
