** STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
** Incumbent will create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment to ensure the holistic development of each student and staff member through cultural, social, spiritual, physical and academic experience. Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education’s mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe’s need for cultural and economic well-being.
In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.
Responsibilities:
The incumbent of the position serves the Native Culture and Language Instructor in the identified Native Language for the Tribal community. Provides learning experiences in Native Language, culture, and history that are appropriate to the needs and interests of all students in the class. Shares knowledge of native tribe history, crafts, ceremonies, and other culturally related factors in a positive manner.
Prepares daily lesson plans which include objective, activities and evaluate methods for group and individual instruction in the academic and residential setting in the areas of land & environment, Identify & Resiliency, Cultural & Language, Kinship & Harmony, Oral Tradition & story, sovereignty & treaties, Way of life & development.
Continuously evaluate individual and group academic progress using performance- based assessments and other relevant evaluative methods. Uses alternative instruction to meet individual needs. Make progress reports to parents and confers with parents and other concerned individuals.
Maintains and environment which promotes opportunities for students to develop positive social skills, self-discipline and positive self-image using the native tribal language and cultural themes.
Uses effective classroom management techniques and handles discipline using best practices in addition, knowledgeable of long-distance and virtual learning.
Supervises assigned students as scheduled during the Academic day and in the Residential setting in order to provide the safety, health and welfare of the students in compliance with school, agency and area guidelines. Participates in educational activities, such as professional workshops, school in-service sessions and any other needed training sessions.
