Corrections Officer Cadet - Correction Department

GENERAL DEFINITION

Monitors and provide security and safety for the facility, staff, residents, and detainees during incarceration.

Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Corrections Sergeant and under the general supervision of the Operations Lieutenant.

Required to attend all meetings, informational sessions, trainings.

• Responsible for learning all required and applicable information provided during training.
• Follow all orders from the certified and supervisory Corrections Staff and Administration.
• Required to learn all applicable tribal, state, and federal codes, Laws, Ordinances, Regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to intake and housing of offenders.
• Learn all aspect of direct and indirect supervision of Residents.
• Learn and be familiar with service providing programs that deal with Residents.
• Learn the use of two-way radio using ten codes.
• Learn to use technology equipment such as computerized booking system, Live Scan Fingerprint System, Video Arraignment, Control and Security, and Communications System.
• Be Customer oriented to provide information to public.

Shadows certified Corrections officers while in training and accompanies them in the conduct of assigned duties.

• Booking of new Residents and preparing arrest records.
• Conducts Pat Search procedures for Offenders detained in the Correctional Facility.
• Maintains daily Corrections Records and Court Orders.
• Provides safety and security of Resident activity through direct and indirect supervision.
• Inspects cells and dayroom areas for cleanliness, sanitation, and for any contraband.
• Maintains and documents daily Resident population.

Supervises the care and housing of residents.

• Conducts booking process, searching for contraband, inventory and placing Resident property in safekeeping.
• Required to work in accordance to duty schedule, and in accordance to staffing requirements in either adult or juvenile populations.
• Provides escort of Residents for arraignments or pretrial and actual trials.
• Assists in transportation of Residents.
• Warrant the maintaining of order during Video Arraignments.
• Direct or serves meals to residents during mealtime hours.
• Washing of clothes, linens, and other items issued to residents.

Maintains Correctional Facility issued uniforms and equipment in a clean, orderly, and professional manner.

• Maintains professional appearance.
• Maintains other equipment such as two-way radio and handcuffs to ensure that the equipment is fully functional and well maintained.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to provide custody and security of inmates including observing actions of inmates. Ability to perform "pat" and/or "strip" search of inmates. Ability to read, write, and understand both oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively in both Zuni and English language. Knowledge in use of force, and the proper treatment of adults and juveniles. Knowledge in dealing with the public.

Knowledge in dealing with a diverse Resident population. Knowledge in performing first aid and CPR. Knowledge of the proper operations of a multi-channel two-way radio. Must be able to administer multiple tasks. Must have ability to complete work thoroughly and accurately. Good knowledge of Tribal and Department Personnel Policies and Procedures. Must have ability to write reports and general correspondence.

Must have the ability to utilize and maintain computerized database system. Must have ability to set up personnel records, correspondence files, program information files, and reference material files. Must have experience and knowledge in general supervision.
