What Your Job Will Be LikeAs an essential member of the Navy Systems Tech Basis team in Building 809, you will contribute to design, development, and qualification activities that support the reliability and safety of the nation’s nuclear deterrent. Your day-to-day work will include:
- Managing shipping, receiving, and accountable inventory of critical assets and equipment, including data entry and tracking in hardware management systems such as Aras.
- Collaborating with engineers and technologists to define and execute tasks independently or as part of a high‑performing team.
- Performing hands‑on assembly, troubleshooting, testing, and soldering on complex system‑level mechanical and electronic hardware.
- Supporting environmental testing activities, setting up mechanical systems, and operating functional testers to ensure proper electrical connections.
- Building trusted relationships across the New Mexico Stockpile Systems Engineering community.
- Participating in the management and accountability of explosives inventory and Classified Administrative Specialist (CAS) responsibilities, with training opportunities.
- Assisting with machine shop operations, including hardware modifications using lathes, mills, and drill presses.
- Working onsite, with flexibility for occasional extended hours and travel.
$74,700 – $144,400
Qualifications We Require- Associate degree in STEM or a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job.
- Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent with the ability to participate in random polygraph testing.
- A strong passion for hands‑on technical work that supports national security and the U.S. Nuclear Stockpile Stewardship.
- Proven ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience with electromechanical systems, including assembly, troubleshooting, testing, and soldering of mechanical and electronic hardware.
- Familiarity with hardware lifecycle management, including shipping, receiving, inventory control, and use of hardware management systems such as Aries.
- Willingness to be trained in Classified Administrative Specialist (CAS) responsibilities and explosives inventory management.
- Experience using machine equipment (e.g., lathes, mills, drill presses) and supporting machine shop operations.
- Strong attention to detail, safety awareness, and commitment to quality.
- Excellent communication skills to build trusted relationships across technical and engineering teams.
The Department 2216‑1 Building 809 Operations and Navy Tech Basis Team is part of the New Mexico Stockpile Systems Engineering group that delivers agile solutions to the nuclear deterrent, managing full‑lifecycle support for hardware needs from provisioning to final disposition.
Essential FunctionsDemonstrate the physical fitness to lift, carry, push, and pull as required.
Security ClearanceThe position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L security clearance to start, or an equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency such as the Department of Defense.
NNSA Requirements for MedPEDsIf you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED) and are employed by Sandia National Laboratories, you may need to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs. Additional steps may be required for on‑site interviews.
