Overview
The City of Albuquerque (CABQ) Ameri Corps VISTA program is designed to strengthen civic engagement and build sustainable systems that address poverty-related challenges across the city. The program focuses on developing and expanding volunteer and civic engagement infrastructure that supports populations disproportionately impacted by poverty, including youth, adults with disabilities, and individuals experiencing homelessness. VISTA members collaborate with City of Albuquerque departments and community partners to design and develop systems, tools, and frameworks that increase access to services, promote volunteerism, and support resident engagement in local decision-making.
This includes creating resources and structures that enable staff and partners to effectively implement and sustain programs over time. Through partnership development, capacity building, and systems improvement, VISTAs help align community-driven solutions with citywide priorities. The program emphasizes sustainable civic engagement strategies, including volunteer recruitment systems, coordination frameworks, leadership development models, and impact assessment tools. VISTA members develop outreach strategies, build frameworks to streamline processes, and strengthen collaboration between the City and nonprofit, educational, and community-based organizations.
By expanding access to resources and fostering cross-sector partnerships, the CABQ VISTA program helps residents recognize and use their collective power to shape the decisions that impact their lives. Through this work, VISTA members contribute to long‑term poverty reduction by strengthening the systems and relationships that support resilient, empowered communities.
The VISTA member will build organizational capacity for civic engagement and volunteer programs within the City of Albuquerque by working internally with City departments to strengthen systems that address poverty-related challenges. The member will analyze and help design internal frameworks, tools, and documentation to support sustainable volunteer management, including policies, workflows, and data tracking. The VISTA will research best practices and develop internal resources to inform staff‑led volunteer and partnership strategies.
Additionally, the VISTA will support internal planning and assessment, contribute to program evaluation and impact measurement, and assist City staff in aligning community initiatives with citywide priorities to ensure long‑term impact beyond the VISTA service year.
