Summary

Responsible for utilizing the nursing process to provide direct patient care to an assigned group of patients during a shift. Responsible for prioritizing the delivery of direct nursing care using time and resources efficiently integrating a standards-based framework model.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care by assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and documenting individual patient needs, actions taken and patient responses.
  • Coordinate patients care through collaboration with the patient/family and healthcare team.
  • Perform assessments as per unit standards and document on appropriate data base/assessment flow sheet.
  • Initiate, utilize and document appropriate protocols and standards of care.
  • Administer medication and treatments as prescribed by physician or standard protocols and document according to policy.
  • Identify and meet patient and family learning and discharge needs on admission and throughout episode of care.
  • Evaluate patient progression toward outcomes per unit standards and document through EOSS etc.
  • Perform competently in emergency situations.
  • Delegate or assign aspects of patient care to healthcare team members commensurate with their validated competency to perform the task.
  • Assume responsibility for the clinical supervision of LPNs and non‑licensed assistive personnel.
  • Provide leadership through communication about and validation of patient care.
  • Assist with various procedures, treatments, surgical techniques or assign to other healthcare team members as appropriate.
  • Complete patient population/age‑specific/procedure and protocol education and competency testing per unit standards.
  • Demonstrate competency in required psychomotor skills.
  • Assist in orientation of new staff or students, serving as a resource person and professional role model.
  • Assume professional responsibility for current nursing structure and clinical standards of care.
  • Incorporate PHS mission (VVPS) in caregiving activities.
  • Support DON philosophies of shared governance and models of care delivery.
  • Assume other leadership roles (i.e., relief charge nurse) as required by the department.
  • Meet professional requirements including:
    • B. In‑service requirements:

      • Age‑specific training (care giving, treatment, assessments specific to the age of populations served).

      • Mandatory yearly in‑service to include BLS, safety training, blood borne pathogen/infection/TB training.
    • C. Performance Standards:

      • Participate in unit/department governance.

      • Adhere to PHS dress code for professionals, including display of .

      • Document own continuing education.

      • Maintain positive communication and relationships with patients, peers and other healthcare team members.

      • Participate in quality improvement activities.

      • Maintain a punctual and reliable attendance record.

      • Complete mandatory in services, competencies and licensure requirements on time.

      • Adhere to safety and equipment policies.
  • Perform other functions as required.
Qualifications
  • Licensure:
    State of New Mexico or Compact State Nursing License or Graduate Nurse Permit required.
  • Academic Preparation:
    Degree from accredited academic nursing program (If a program is under conditional status, approval may be granted by system CNO).
