Position Overview

Join our team as a Mechanical Measurements Trades professional and play a critical role in delivering precise mechanical calibrations that drive innovation and quality in cutting‑edge engineering and research environments.

Location:

Sandia National Laboratories, onsite.

Role:
Mechanical Calibration, part of the Primary Standards Laboratory.

• Plan, perform, and analyze a variety of mechanical measurements in engineering, research and development, and complex production environments.
• Operate state‑of‑the‑art measurement and calibration equipment, including coordinate measuring machines (CMM), optical and video measuring centers, and surface texture/profile analyzers.
• Use solid‑model CAD/CAM software to generate profile definitions and perform complex set‑ups using open‑set techniques.
• Prepare standard and special computer‑generated measurement reports and maintain required records in computerized databases.
• Provide technical oversight for shop, sub‑shop, and out‑of‑shop fabricate‑to‑print work.
• Consult technical personnel on interpretation of measurement standards and design issues; write and develop cost estimates, reports, process travelers, and work instructions/procedures.
• Lead work assignments, schedule commitments, and training of coworkers as required.
• Execute work following industry‑standard safety practices.
• All work will be performed onsite.

• Minimum 5‑8 years as a fully qualified Mechanical Measurements Tradesperson or completion of a state‑approved mechanical measurements apprenticeship program.
• Documented experience in the calibration/certification of M&TE and secondary reference standards.
• Experience developing calibration procedures and performing uncertainty analysis.
• Proficiency with precision measurement equipment, machine‑tool alignments, torque‑wrench calibrations, and length/mass/force calibrations in a standards laboratory.
• Computer skills to create, edit, and execute programs on CMMs and related equipment; use of CAD/CAM software.
• Ability to produce standard and special measurement reports and maintain records in computerized databases.
• Technical oversight of shop and fabricate‑to‑print activities.
• Consultation on measurement standards and design issues, writing cost estimates, reports, process travelers, and work instructions/procedures.
• Leadership responsibilities for scheduling, assigning work, instructing, consulting, or training others.
• Adherence to industry‑standard safety practices.
• All work performed onsite.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q‑level security clearance (U.S. citizenship required).

• Documented training in metrology (e.g., apprenticeship or military training).
• Experience with coordinate measuring machines (CMM) and/or video systems.
• Knowledge of dimensional metrology, measurement uncertainty, and calibration processes.
• Advanced understanding of metrology concepts and their application to lab and onsite calibrations.
• Advanced knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) related to gauge and fixture design.
• Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word).
• Active DOE “L” or “Q” clearance.
