- FLSA Status:
Non‑Exempt - Bargaining Unit: AFSCME
- Provide a uniformed presence to protect property and maintain a high visibility presence to deter illegal activity.
- Communicate directly with law enforcement officials and the public to address safety or security concerns.
- Warn persons of rule infractions or violations and detain or evict violators from premises, using force when necessary, per policy.
- Monitor and authorize entrance of employees, visitors, and other persons to guard against theft and maintain security of premises.
- Complete incident reports for equipment or property damage, theft, presence of unauthorized persons, or unusual occurrences; monitor security detecting devices or surveillance equipment to screen individuals and prevent passage of prohibited articles into restricted areas.
- Assist with emergency evacuations of facilities and conduct protective sweeps of assigned areas.
- Perform miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned.
- Perform additional duties as required for NMSU special events, including sporting events, concerts, campus activities, and security monitoring or escort duties.
- Required education:
High School diploma or GED. - Preferred qualifications:
Former police or security service in good standing; familiarity with the use of firearms; physically fit and able to pass a basic police service agility test; able to stand, walk, and lift 50 pounds for long periods. - Special certification/licensure:
Minimum age 21 years old; legally able to purchase and carry a handgun; complete at least 80 hours of initial training and obtain certification through NMSU Police Department within six months from hire date; hold a current NM driver’s license or obtain an NMSU driving permit upon hire. - Special requirements:
Legally able and willing to handle firearms; no felony or misdemeanor convictions involving domestic violence (New Mexico State Statute 30‑7‑16); full background investigation including fingerprints, polygraph, and psychological exam; complete Security Officer Level I, II, and III training within six months of hire; pass background check by NMSU Police Department.
- Environment: moderate exposure to extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
- Physical effort:
Light; not more than two hours per day. - Lifting requirements:
Handle average‑weight objects up to 25 pounds; stand and/or walk for more than four hours per day. - Risk:
Exposure to hazards or physical risks requiring basic safety precautions.
