General DescriptionThe primary responsibility of this position is to perform routine semi-skilled and skilled maintenance, repairs and operations of community water and sewer distribution systems operations and lines.
Supervision ReceivedWork is performed under the general supervision of the Utility Manager.
Supervision ExercisedNo Supervisory Duties.
DutiesResponsible for operation and maintenance of ground water production system and sewer system.
- Assists in all phases of maintenance, repairs, and renovation of water and sewer lines, wells, and lift stations by performing manual labor in various matters.
- Performs daily inspection checks and monitors water and wastewater systems using tools and may use specialized equipment.
- Performs routine waterline/sewer lines repairs and maintenance; plumbing work; installs and repairs water and sewer service and main lines; installs, maintains and repairs all components on the systems.
- Installs, services, and maintains equipment such as pumps in lift stations, operates gate valves, motors, and electrical parts in the electrical control panels.
- Performs daily facility inspections of well water production sites, wastewater treatment facilities, and collection systems.
- Conducts sampling as required.
- Assists in all phases of maintenance, repairs, and renovation of water and sewer lines, wells, and lift stations by performing manual labor in various matters.
- Digs trenches for water, sewer, or gas lines.
- Assists in removing old water lines, sewer lines, plumbing, and fixtures.
- Assists in removing concrete slabs as necessary to access old plumbing and sewer lines.
- Assists in the installation of new water and sewer lines.
- Assists in the installation of water meters and activating meters.
- Assists with service and repair of main sewage plug-ups.
- Assists with operation and maintenance of wells and lift stations.
- Assists in loading and unloading materials delivered by truck to the jobsite, including lumber, equipment, pipes, insulation, fixtures, and such.
- Loads concrete debris on backhoe for disposal.
- Spreads, and levels dirt and gravel, using pick and shovels.
- Assists in removing old plumbing materials and demolition debris (i.e. fixtures, lumber, insulation) from jobsites and loading them on trucks for disposal.
- Maintains and cleans all tools, equipment, material, and project work area.
- Assists in collecting meter readings.
- Monitors water pressure and water levels in storage tanks.
- Submit recorded information to the Program Manager.
- Prepares warning and entry signs and posts them accordingly.
- Performs periodic inspections of sewage lagoons.
- Responsible for documenting and reporting all activities.
- Complete required daily documentation, logs, and reports.
- May be required to assist other Programs/Departments during emergencies as needed.
- Must be available for emergency on call rotation.
- Adheres to all mandatory safety practices.
- Maintains and cleans office, yard, well compounds, and water storage tank compounds.
Skills and Abilities
Some knowledge of water lines, sewer lines, and utility systems. Good knowledge of plumbing and hand tools. Ability to read and comprehend instructions, reports, data, manuals, plans, specifications and other correspondence. Ability to operate small gas and electric powered laborer tools. Some knowledge in one or more areas in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, or masonry work. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively in Zuni and English. Ability to read blueprints. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with Tribal employees and general public.
High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) with one (1) year of work experience in the field of construction or maintenance.
Must obtain certification for USEPA Region 6 Tribal Drinking Water Certification with one (1) year of work experience in utility operations. Ten (10) approved Continuing Education Hours.
License and CertificatesMust have valid New Mexico Driver’s License with no DWI convictions within the past three (3) years and no drug/alcohol convictions within the three (3) years. Driving is an essential part of the duties.
Physical DemandsCandidates must be in excellent physical condition. Visual and auditory acuity required. Must be able to lift 75 lbs. without assistance. Position involves walking, stooping, kneeling, climbing, lifting and loading of piping and tool attachments of the equipment. Position is subject to odors and fumes from raw sewage, mud, and dust. Position may be subjected to other pollutants from chemicals, paint, and petroleum products that may be in the system.
