This is an entry level position involved in the collection and disposal of commercial and residential refuse.
Safety Sensitive Position & Drug Testing PolicyThis position is classified as a safety‑sensitive position and is subject to the city’s drug testing policy, covering pre‑employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post‑accident testing for the following prohibited substances: marijuana, amphetamines, opioids, phencyclidine (PCP), cocaine, and any drug not approved for medical use by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Responsibilities- Operates a flatbed truck to collect large items such as tree limbs and furniture for disposal at landfill.
- Cuts or mows weeds and grass to leave streets, alleys and surrounding property in a clean and sanitary condition.
- Utilizes hand tools such as shovels, pitchforks, rakes and small power tools and mowers.
- Under supervision, operates tractors, trucks and other large equipment with attachments such as mowers, loaders, chippers and forklifts (if forklift certified).
- Washes, paints and services city equipment and machinery.
- Cleans, maintains, refuels, inspects and may periodically assist in changing oil, flats or minor repairs on the assigned vehicle.
- Assists other city departments and divisions moving large or heavy objects and general maintenance.
- Assists at the landfill in picking up paper and blown debris.
- Helps in changing out rotten containers as needed.
- Understands the full operation and all safety aspects of the rear load polecat system.
- Assists the driver at the landfill when unloading.
- Cleans behind packer and inside hopper.
- Provides written and verbal reports on property damage and accidents to the superintendent immediately upon occurrence.
- Uses city-provided safety wear in accordance with the City of Clovis Safety Manual.
- Performs other assigned duties such as repairs on wooden, chain‑link and cinder block fences as well as sewer clean‑outs in the alleyway.
- Operation and maintenance of hand and small power tools; job requires some heavy lifting.
- Must possess a valid New Mexico Commercial Driver License or be able to obtain one within six months.
- Knowledge of department rules and regulations.
- Safe operation of light equipment, hand and small power tools.
- Performs functions with minimal supervision; understands and follows basic safety precautions, rules and regulations.
- Interacts diplomatically with public, establishing and maintaining effective and cooperative working relationships with others.
- Moderately heavy work involving frequent standing, walking, balancing, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling and squatting; pushing, pulling and lifting items weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services.
- Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Clovis policies.
- Essential duties are predominantly performed outdoors with exposure to all types of weather conditions.
- Employees are exposed to airborne particles, potentially toxic and/or caustic chemicals, extreme temperatures, and work around traffic and heavy construction equipment; they travel from site to site.
- Use of safety shoes, glasses and other safety equipment is required.
