OverviewUnder direct or general supervision, this position installs, maintains, repairs, and operates equipment, facilities, pump stations, and related appurtenances in a wastewater treatment plant and collection system; performs laboratory analysis and adjusts chemicals to comply with Federal, State, and local laws and regulations; operates and maintains plant and collections systems equipment including pumps, motors, valves, chemical feed systems, and filters; performs preventive maintenance and repairs;
and performs related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direct or general supervision from the Wastewater Superintendent. Exercises no supervision of staff. May provide technical and functional direction to lower-level staff.
Class CharacteristicsTreatment/Collection System Operator II: This is the full journey-level class in the wastewater treatment plant and collection system operations series, performing the full range of duties to ensure facilities operate safely and effectively. Responsibilities include standardized testing, inspection, preventive maintenance, minor repairs, and shift duties on evenings, weekends, and holidays. It is distinguished from lower levels by required certifications and on-call duties;
the Chief Operator oversees lower-level staff on weekends, industrial inspections, and more complex duties.
Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and normally filled by advancement from Trainee and I levels. Management reserves the right to modify work assignments and to provide accommodations as needed.
Responsibilities by FunctionWhen assigned to the treatment plant operations function:
- Monitors plant operations equipment and processes to ensure compliance with environmental and public health standards; optimizes efficiency, adjusts chemical dosages, changes pumping rates, and monitors equipment daily.
- Reviews and analyzes automated data; revises equipment settings as appropriate; notifies supervisor of unusual situations; inspects or corrects system problems.
- Reads, records, and computes readings of meters and gauges; interprets information for operations; adjusts flow charts and processes based on data, samples, readings, and records.
- Collects wastewater, sludge, and other samples; performs standard chemical and physical tests to ensure regulatory compliance and effective plant operation.
- Interprets routine laboratory and process tests to optimize plant performance; checks results and recommends changes to supervisor.
- Uses chemicals in accordance with industry standards; performs preventive maintenance and service on equipment (motors, pumps, drive units, etc.).
- Operates valves, pumps, and automated controls to regulate wastewater flow; disposes of effluent as required.
- Removes blockages; replaces worn parts; assists maintenance as needed.
- Lubricates machinery and performs routine maintenance.
- Performs preventive maintenance and inspects facilities to determine maintenance or repair needs.
When assigned to the collections system maintenance function:
- Performs construction, maintenance, and repair of City wastewater utilities systems and facilities; includes hydro-cleaning, rodding, vacuuming debris, root-cutting, CCTV monitoring, and manhole work.
- Maintains wastewater lines and pump stations to ensure continuous flow; installs and maintains mains and laterals.
- Operates CCTV system and equipment to monitor and prevent problems; installs and maintains wastewater manholes and related components.
- Performs minor repairs and installs clean-out boxes; maintains sewer infrastructure to ensure safety and compliance.
- Inspects and services pumps, check valves, and floats; vacuums wet wells and lift stations; assists in installing new laterals and mains.
