Purpose Statement
The job of Life Skills Para Educator is done for the purpose of assisting, tutoring, and training special education and other identified students with significant disabilities in a classroom or similar learning situation; providing personal care assistance; and performing classroom clerical tasks in support of the instructional process.
Job DescriptionPark County School District 6 — Life Skills Para Educator
This job reports to the Building Principal.
Essential Functions- Administers assistance (e.g., suctioning, toileting, diapering) under supervision to support students with cognitive/physical needs, developing daily living activities and behavior skills.
- Assists students with disabilities within the general direction of the teacher — reading, arts and crafts, classroom activities, individual assignments, attending job site visits—providing opportunities to participate in academic and functional life skills activities.
- Attends meetings as requested — in-service training, workshops, IEP sessions— to acquire skills and convey information regarding student needs.
- Collaborates with teachers and staff to provide efficient, necessary and appropriate assistance to students.
- Confers with teachers to evaluate student progress and implement IEP objectives.
- Instructs students one-on-one or in small groups on math, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing and verbal skills to align with IEP goals.
- Maintains instructional materials and/or student files to ensure availability and reliable information.
- Modifies instructional materials or provides accommodations under teacher or case manager direction, in line with the student’s IEP, to support progress toward IEP goals and access to curriculum.
- Monitors students in library, field trips, classroom, lunchroom, bus, job sites to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
- Records observations and incidents to provide documentation and communicate information to appropriate personnel.
- Responds to staff inquiries—administrators, psychologists, teachers, counselors—providing critical information on student progress.
- Assists other personnel as necessary to promote an efficient and effective work environment.
Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Operating standard office equipment, preparing accurate records, adhering to safety practices, administering basic first aid.
- Basic math and written communication skills, understanding of multi-step written and oral instructions.
- Ability to schedule activities, gather data, consider various factors when using equipment, and collaborate with diverse groups.
- Problem-solving skills, maintain confidentiality, exhibit patience and compassion, manage frequent interruptions, adapt to changing priorities, organize tasks, and work as part of a team.
Responsibility
Work under direct supervision using standardized procedures; provide information/advice to others; operate within a defined budget; collaborate with other work units.
Work Environment
Requires significant lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. 20% sitting, 50% walking, 30% standing; minimal temperature variations; light exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
Experience and Education
Job-related experience desired; high school diploma or equivalent required.
Required Testing
District Proficiency Test or AA Degree or 60 college/university credits.

Salary Range
$21.70 - $34.20.
