Special Education Resource Para Educator
Purpose Statement:
The job of Special Education Para Educator is performed to assist, tutor, and train special education and other identified students with significant disabilities in a classroom or similar learning situation; provide personal care assistance; and perform classroom clerical tasks in support of the instructional process.
Reports to:
Building Principal
- Administers assessments in small groups or one-on-one in a separate testing area to accommodate student needs.
- Assists other personnel as required to ensure an efficient and effective work environment.
- Assists students with disabilities under the general direction of the regular classroom or special education teacher (e.g., explain words, read to students, assist with developing motor skills, monitor individual assignments, take class notes, scribe, restate information, teach life skills and hygiene, etc.) to allow them to participate in classroom activities and progress toward IEP goals with access to the general curriculum, as appropriate.
- Attends meetings as requested (e.g., inservice training, workshops, IEPs) to obtain skills and convey information regarding student needs.
- Collaborates with teachers and other instructional assistants to provide efficient, necessary, and appropriate assistance to students.
- Confers with teachers (special education and/or regular classroom) and case managers to assist in evaluating student progress and implementing IEP services.
- Maintains instructional materials and student files/records (e.g., workbooks, worksheets, assignments, portfolios, Behavior Intervention Plan) to ensure availability of items and provide reliable information.
- Modifies instructional materials or provides accommodations under the direction of a teacher or Case Manager in accordance with the student’s IEP to support progress toward IEP goals and access to the general curriculum.
- Monitors students in library, field trips, classroom activities, lunchroom, bus, and playground to ensure a safe and positive environment while providing access to academic and non‑academic activities.
- Records observations and incidents relating to specific students for documentation and communication with appropriate personnel.
- Responds to inquiries from staff (e.g., administrators, psychologists, teachers, counselors) to provide information, direction, and appropriate referrals.
- Supports the implementation of BIP to provide interventions and support for the educational and emotional needs of each student and collects data regarding the effect of interventions.
- Assists other personnel as required to ensure an efficient and effective work environment.

SKILLS:
operating standard office equipment; preparing and maintaining accurate records; adhering to safety practices and procedures; administering basic first aid.
KNOWLEDGE: basic math, understanding written procedures, routine document writing, clear speaking, and comprehension of multi‑step written and oral instructions.
ABILITY: scheduling activities, meetings, and events; gathering and collating data; using equipment safely; working with diverse groups; problem‑solving; maintaining confidentiality; exhibiting patience and compassion; adapting to changing priorities; organizing tasks; and working as part of a team.
Responsibilities include working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others; and operating within a defined budget.
Work Environment involves significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling; some climbing and balancing; stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling; and fine finger dexterity. General physical demands: 20% sitting, 50% walking, 30% standing. Work performed under minimal temperature variations with some risk of injury or illness.
Experience & EducationJob related experience desired.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Required TestingDistrict Proficiency Test or an AA Degree or 60 college/university credits.
