Apple – Product Design Engineer – Boise, USA
The home Product Design Group is inventing the next generation of products for the home. Our group is accountable for conceiving, designing, testing, troubleshooting, and bringing new products into production. We work closely with industrial design, audio engineering, packaging, sensing, hardware, operations, advertising, and marketing teams to create high‑quality, sustainable, cost‑effective, high‑performance, and delightful products.
Responsibilities- Work collaboratively with disciplines including commercial design, operations, and cross‑functional engineering teams.
- Brainstorm solutions and design concepts for a wide range of complex engineering problems.
- Broaden, prototype, test, and troubleshoot new designs.
- Lead design critiques and contribute to product design discussions.
- Present designs to cross‑team stakeholders and executives.
- Generate specifications and technical drawings.
- Communicate with manufacturing and external suppliers to optimize designs for performance, aesthetics, and manufacturability.
- Conduct failure analysis and design of experiments (DOE) to determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Validate and iterate designs through multiple cycles.
- Translate concepts into manufacturable parts and assemblies.
- Ensure designs meet cosmetic and functional requirements to deliver excellent hardware to customers.
- 2+ years of experience in product design or a related field.
- Strong engineering fundamentals and high personal motivation.
- Design intelligence with accurate mechanical intuition, creative problem‑solving, inquisitive nature, and a desire to iterate.
- Excellent communication skills – written, visual, and verbal; able to convey design concepts and contribute to brainstorming sessions.
- Experience developing parts and assemblies in 3‑D CAD.
- Knowledge of manufacturability (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), statistical tolerance analysis, purposeful dimensioning, and geometric tolerancing.
- Experience with FEA concepts and modeling.
- Flexibility to work in a fast‑changing environment.
- Ability to travel internationally up to 20%.
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
Benefits & CompensationThe base pay range for this function is $130,000–$242,000, based on skills, experience, and location. In addition to base pay, Apple offers stock‑purchase programs, discretionary stock unit awards, medical and dental insurance, retirement benefits, discounted products, tuition reimbursement for career development, and eligibility for discretionary bonuses or commissions. Relocation assistance may be available.
