Position: Controller - Riley Creek Lumber (Coeur d'Alene)

The Holding Company Controller oversees the accounting, financial reporting, and administrative operations of the Holding Company entities and MAB Trust. This role ensures accurate consolidated reporting, maintains strong internal controls, and coordinates effectively with external tax, legal, and insurance advisors. The Controller manages the financial affairs of the ownership group by monitoring cash flow, analyzing performance, facilitating tax planning, coordinating insurance renewals, and supporting estate and legacy planning.

This position may also supervise a Junior Accounting Coordinator—providing guidance, feedback, and mentorship—to ensure continuity of critical accounting and administrative functions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Oversee accounting and financial reporting for Riley Creek Lumber Company – A holding company of Operating Company subsidiaries, Real Estate Investments, Marketable Securities Investments, and other non-operating assets.
  • Supervise the Junior Accounting Coordinator, providing direction, guidance, and mentorship to ensure timely and accurate completion of accounting and administrative tasks.
  • Serve as backup for the Junior Accounting Coordinator, performing key responsibilities as needed to maintain continuity of operations.
  • Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and other work prepared by the Junior Accounting Coordinator.
  • Maintain the general ledger and ensure proper accounting for wholly owned operating company subsidiaries, investments, timber and timberland, and intercompany transactions.
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and supporting schedules.
  • Manage entity consolidations, including intercompany reconciliations and eliminations.
  • Coordinate audit and review activities, providing documentation to external auditors as needed.
  • Develop and maintain annual budgets and forecasts, including variance analysis and updates.
  • Coordinate with banks and investment advisors to manage transfers, cash flow, and debt service.
  • Support investment tracking, including capital calls, distributions, and performance reporting.
  • Collaborate with external tax advisors to support annual filings, estimated payments, and compliance.
  • Maintain organized tax documentation and ensure timely information flow to advisors.
  • Oversee personal and entity-level insurance programs, including property, liability, and aviation.
  • Maintain corporate and trust records, entity charts, and governing documents.
  • Coordinate with legal counsel on ownership structures, estate planning, and compliance filings.
  • Prepare materials for board and shareholder meetings as needed.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience managing accounting and reporting for multiple entities, partnerships, or trusts.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Skills:
  • Strong organizational, communication, and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to pass a drug and alcohol test, post-offer pre-employment physical, and background check.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s degree in accounting or a related field.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
