Job Summary
The City of Coeur d'Alene is looking to expand our eligibility list to hire Lateral Firefighter/Paramedics. Lateral Firefighter/Paramedics who meet the criteria below do not have to take the Public Safety Test and may apply for this posting. Applicants who do not meet the detailed requirements below should refer to the Firefighter posting 26-00014.
Lateral CriteriaFirefighters protect the public in emergency situations; they respond to fires, accidents, medical emergencies, chemical spills, flooding, water rescue and other incidents where risks are posed to life and property. This job entails using sophisticated firefighting and rescue equipment, promoting fire safety, inspecting and enforcing safety standards, working with police and other emergency services, undertaking physical and academic training, and maintaining vehicles, equipment, hydrants, water supplies and general living/working quarters.
Firefighters may also receive training for and assume specialty roles in high‑rise training, ice rescue, lifeguard, confined space, fireboat operation, wildland apparatus, search and rescue and/or water rescue team or other areas.
Current Lateral Firefighter/Paramedic applicants will receive an entry base hourly wage of $23.24 - $28.74 (56‑hour workweek), plus an additional $4.10 per hour for Paramedic License.
- Lateral entry annual base wage range including paramedic stipend $79,614 - $95,630
- Full pay range for 56‑hour Firefighter/Paramedic is $74,595-$108,350.
- Additional hourly pay is available per CBA for FLSA, educational incentive, holiday pay, etc.
- Holiday pay is an additional benefit paid to firefighters annually at the employee’s base wage
* 264 hours (11 total holiday’s)
Lateral candidates who meet the required criteria are not required to take the Public Safety Testing (PST) written exam.

The City of Coeur d'Alene Fire Department will proctor their own physical agility exam in Coeur d'Alene on Sunday, April 19, 2026. Candidates must be present; the PST Firefighter Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) will not be accepted. for our physical agility demonstration video.
Following the physical agility exam, interview will be scheduled for April 20-23, 2026. Only successful applicants passing the physical agility will be scheduled for an interview.

Minimum Requirements- 18 years of age by the date of the written exam.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license and U.S. citizenship.
- Paramedic license or ability to obtain certification within 30 days from hire.
- Successful applicants will need to complete and pass the following as a condition of employment:
- Medical Examination
- Thorough background investigation
- Drug and alcohol testing
- Reference checks
Firefighters work 24‑hour shifts, averaging 10 per month (2912 hours annually), rotating 48 hours on and 96 hours off. For specific details regarding wages, benefits and working conditions, for the Coeur d'Alene Firefighters Local No. 710 collective bargaining agreement. Firefighters also do not pay into Social Security.
