Team Highlights:

The labor and delivery unit at Kootenai specializes in providing personalized family centered care to pregnant women in our growing community. As a staff member of L&D you will have the opportunity to care for women and infants during the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods. As you gain experience you will be trained to be an OB triage nurse in our emergency department working side by side with our exceptional OB Hospitalist team.

  • We offer ongoing educational services for our team including drills on new evidence‑based practice, simulations in our state‑of‑the‑art simulation center and classes specific to our unique specialty for residents and fellowship RNs, as well as onsite fetal monitoring courses
  • We follow AWHONN staffing guidelines and are part of the Perinatal Quality Collaborative in Idaho. We have an expanding maternal fetal medicine service, high‑volume OB emergency department and 2 OR suites on our unit. We are able to care for patients as early as 26 weeks with our Level 3 NICU support.
  • L&D nurses will be cross‑trained to care for postpartum patients and feeder grower infants in our NICU as we are a closed service line.

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates, plans, implements, and documents nursing care for an assigned patient population and assists physician during examinations and procedures
  • Performs various patient tests and administers medications within the scope of practice of the registered nurse
  • Promotes patient’s independence by establishing patient care goals and teaching patient and family to understand condition, medications, and self‑care skills
  • A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field
  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function
  • Competent to meet age specific needs of the unit assigned

Requirements and

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate of a nationally accredited Nursing program required
  • Licensed RN with a minimum 3 years’ patient‑facing RN experience at time of hire, ADN or diploma required; BSN or higher preferred
  • All non‑BSN RN's with less than 3 years’ patient‑facing RN experience at time of hire are required to be enrolled in a baccalaureate (or higher) degree program in nursing within 1 year of employment, with completion within 3 years of hire
  • State of Idaho Registered Nurse OR licensure pending as documented by temporary licensure OR current RN licensure from a state participating in the “multistate privilege to practice” compact with Idaho prior to start date
  • BLS Required

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to lift and move up to 35 lbs

  • Must be able to push, pull, or transport heavy equipment
  • Must be able to assist in patient transfer
  • Exposure to needles, blood and body fluids, etc.
