Trauma Injury Prevention & Education Coordinator

Position Summary

Responsible for identifying, establishing, and maintaining relationships and programs with affiliated referring hospitals, EMS agencies, Kootenai Health staff and communities throughout our region to promote optimal care of the injured patient and meeting the needs of all personnel involved in the continuum of care for the trauma patient. This includes development and management of evidence-based injury prevention programs, initiatives, outreach, and education related to adult and pediatric trauma.

A nurse in this position must be self-motivated and have the ability to work within a high level of autonomy and flexibility.

• Participates with hospital and community education, outreach and prevention programs
• Assists in the development and implementation of trauma programs and events involving all age groups across the continuum of care
• Plans, schedules, reports, budgets, tracks and executes evidence-based injury prevention programs, educational outreach, and injury prevention related research
• Utilizes community needs assessment and trauma registry data to identify injury prevention programs and educational courses within the region
• Maintains accurate records of all injury prevention activities and provides frequent reports regarding injury prevention activities including effectiveness and impact of programs
• Provides adult education to the community and health care professionals
• Develops staff using a variety of adult learning principles including didactic, self-directed, and clinical modalities with evaluation of teaching and learning strategies
• Works in collaboration with local, regional and national injury preventions programs and organizations as appropriate for injury prevention within the community
• Acts as a liaison and attends community coalitions, regional meetings, conferences, and workshops to coordinate and/or participate in injury prevention projects and initiatives
• Assists in the identification of sources for funding injury prevention related projects, including project proposals and grant applications
• Meets requirements specific to the Injury Prevention Coordinator as outlined by the American College of Surgeons (ACS)
• Assists with producing education materials and marketing tools for community-based programs
• Promotes consistent practice amongst Kootenai Health staff caring for injured patients, leading to improved outcomes
• Identifies knowledge and practice gaps and actively collaborates to create solutions
• Performs other related duties as assigned
• Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field
• Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function
• Competent to meet age specific needs of the unit assigned

• BSN required
• State of Idaho Registered Nurse OR licensure pending as documented by temporary licensure OR current RN licensure from a state participating in the “multistate privilege to practice” compact with Idaho prior to start date
• Prior experience within a hospital setting and basic knowledge of a trauma patient’s care through the system required
• Minimum 2 years’ clinical experience in emergency, trauma, or critical care required; 2 years' emergency, trauma or critical care experience in an American College of Surgeons verified level II trauma center preferred
• Advanced clinical practice skills, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the trauma patient population required
• Prior charge nurse or leadership experience preferred
• Kootenai Health approved professional certification to demonstrate clinical expertise required within 6 months of hire, preferably CEN, TCRN and/or CCRN
