Overview

At Consumer Reports, we know there’s more to testing a car than how the rubber meets the road. While our Auto Engineers do test drive cars and trucks on our test track and around town, they are also assessing how the design and functionality of each vehicle impacts both the driver and passenger’s experience and safety. As a Human Factors Engineer, Auto Test at our 327-acre Auto Test Center, you will report to the Associate Director, Auto Testing.

You’ll work closely with Auto testers, Usability Testers and journalists across the organization to test, capture and record the data that contributes to how we evaluate over 100 vehicles per year. This position requires you to be onsite at our CT Auto Tester Center in Colchester, Connecticut and is not eligible for remote work.

THE OPPORTUNITY How You’ll Make An Impact

The extensive testing and exhaustive feedback that CR’s auto testers share is critical information that consumers rely on before they decide which vehicle to purchase. Auto manufacturers are listening as well, using findings from our data, testing and research to influence the safety and usability features included in the cars and trucks they build. Your expertise in Human Factors, design, usability and ergonomics will play a huge part in how we test, capture and record this influential data.

In this position, you’ll coordinate and participate in the hands‑on testing and reporting of findings for nearly 100 production and concept level vehicles each year. You will also support the Cars testing team by providing market data, automotive retail trends and insights to be integrated into content, assisting in the purchasing of new test vehicles and tracking how each test vehicle is delivered and ensuring that data concerning running changes, specifications, crash test results and pricing are accurate in the CR database.

You may also be asked to be a CR expert at industry events, in press interviews or on our podcast.

About You You’ll Be Highly Rated If:
  • You have earned a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Human Factors, Cognitive Psychology, , Applied Science.
  • You have industry experience. You have at least 2-years of experience in a related vehicle-testing capacity in the automotive industry or a Master’s Degree in a related field.
  • You are a strong and confident communicator . Your experience includes communicating findings via written and oral reports.
  • Y ou are comfortable and proficient with both Microsoft and Google Suite . You have used Excel to capture data, PowerPoint for presentations and Google Docs for communication sharing.
  • You must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.

  • You have multimedia interaction experience. You don’t have to be an expert but you should be comfortable in interviews, as a spokesperson and on video or podcast platforms.
  • You’re organized. That includes attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work within deadlines.
  • You can take the lead when it comes to coordinating staff around time‑sensitive projects.
  • You’re up to date on everything auto. That includes compiling and writing industry technical reports.
  • You are occasionally available to respond as needed to auto-related current events, sometimes outside of normal business hours.

Our Commitment To Fair Pay

At Consumer Reports, we are committed to fair, transparent pay and we strive to provide competitive, market‑informed compensation. The target salary range for this position is 94,. It is anticipated that most qualified candidates will fall near the middle of this range. Compensation for the successful candidate will be informed by the candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, competencies and experience.

Salary ranges for union positions are determined by collective bargaining agreement with the News Guild of New York.
