Ambrose Avenue Group Practice is thrilled to offer an excellent opportunity for a general practice assistant (GPA) to join our team on a part-time basis, working 15-17 hours per week.

As a GPA at Ambrose Avenue Group Practice, you will play a vital role in supporting our GPs and enhancing the care experience for our local community. We welcome applications from those who can demonstrate strong transferable skills.

Main duties of the job
  • Assist clinical staff with daily triage requests, prioritise actions, and arrange appointments, referrals, tests, and follow-up appointments for patient
  • Redirect correspondence to other professionals, such as clinical pharmacists.
  • Extract key information from letters, accurately code patient data, and update records.
  • Manage workflow and prioritize key tasks to help free up GP time.
  • Assist with blood pressure checks, urine dipstick tests, ECGs, phlebotomy, and more.
  • Support GPs during immunization sessions or wound care.
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients about procedures and care.
  • Serve as an important link between GPs, other clinicians, external agencies, and patients.
  • Ensure seamless patient care by collaborating with hospital teams, social services, and community providers.
About us

Ambrose Avenue Group Practice is a friendly, long-established, award-winning, progressive GP practice. We are based over two surgery sites within 10 minutes of each other, serving the population of Stanway and Pretty gate in Colchester, Essex. We are a training practice and offer services to a population of over 14,500 patients. The clinical team consists of eight GPs, GP trainee, four advanced nurse practitioners, three nurses, two healthcare assistants, and various allied health professionals, including GP assistant, health and wellbeing coach, clinical pharmacist, pharmacy technicians, care coordinator, social prescriber and care advisor.

We hold monthly meetings and training sessions and have a diverse team of clinicians, including first contact physio, pharmacists, ANP/NP, care coordinator, social prescriber, health coach, GP assistant and an award-winning team of mental health workers.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Willingness to undertake or already possess a GP Assistant Certificate (or equivalent)
Experience
  • Previous experience in an administrative or healthcare role (experience in a GP surgery or primary care is highly desirable).
  • Knowledge of patient confidentiality, data protection, and safeguarding principles.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with a keen eye for detail.
  • A commitment to teamwork and the ability to work independently.
  • Full UK driving license (to travel between sites).
  • Flexibility to adapt to the evolving needs of primary care.
  • Competency in basic clinical tasks such as phlebotomy and ECG.
  • Familiarity with GP software systems (e.g., Systm One).
  • Understanding of the Quality Outcome Framework (QoF) and Investment and Impact Framework (IIF).
