Rough Grinder

The Rough Grinder is responsible for removing excess metal from memorial castings and vase cores using straight and angled grinders to ensure a smooth finish. The position requires cross‑training in other areas due to physical demands. Employees assigned to perform rough grinding receive an additional premium per hour for hours worked in this specific role.

Hourly Pay: $19.00–$29.11 per hour

Work Hours:

Monday–Thursday 5:00 am – 2:00 pm;
Friday 5:00 am – 11:00 am; overtime as needed.

• Transfer memorial plates from the conveyor to the sanding table or grinding booth; approximately 100 plates per day, average weight 30 lb per plate.
• Use an angle grinder with a hard fiber disc (~8 lb) to grind the back of the memorial plate and remove file or gating marks.
• Use an angle grinder with a hard fiber disc and straight grinder with a diamond wheel to clean the inside and outside of the vase core.
• Use a vase gauge to ensure completed vase cores fit correctly with their plastic sleeve.
• Use the belt sander to remove burrs, smooth, and straighten the sides of the memorial plate.
• Pre‑grind, grind, and sand large flat features of architectural and special signage (e.g., bevels, scrolls, accolades) to achieve a smooth finish.
• Inspect all work for defects to ensure product meets quality standards and work‑order specifications.
• Route all completed work to the next area of production as directed on the work order.

• Strong patience, sustained concentration, and endurance using fine motor skills.
• Good hand‑eye coordination.
• Ability to perform various duties without interruption and change tasks fluidly.
• Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
• Excellent problem‑solving and critical‑thinking skills, emphasizing time management and efficiency.
• General math skills.
• Ability to read work orders, production tickets, and dimensional drawings.
• Ability to read a tape measure, imperial and metric.
• Team member who adheres to safety protocols and is willing to cross‑train.
• Capable of standing and working with heavy tools continuously.
