Job Description

Job Title: Paraprofessional - Life Skills

Reports to: Assigned Building Principal

Bargaining Group: ESE

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position
: 7 hours per day, 190 days per school year (10 months)

Salary: $20.06 – $26.33 per hour (educational incentive available per collective bargaining agreement)

Benefits: Medical/Dental/Vision, FSA/DCAP, Life/AD&D through SEBB, and retirement through DRS for eligible employees

Additional Benefits: Optional 403(b) retirement plan;
Optional DCP (deferred compensation program) retirement plan

Leave: 9 sick days (pro‑rated for mid‑year hires), 9 paid holidays

Required Qualifications
  • 18 years of age; and
  • High school diploma or equivalent; and
  • Meet the Washington State Para educator Minimum Employment requirements by showing evidence of one of the following:
    • Associate degree; or
    • At least 72 quarter or 48 semester credits of 100 level courses or higher; or
    • Pass the ETS Para‑Pro Assessment with a score of 455 or higher;
    • Pass the Pearson Paraprofessional Assessment with a minimum qualifying score of 220; or
    • Pass the Master Teacher Inc. Para educator Online Training Program with a minimum passing score of 65% on each of the two required assessments (applicable fees paid by applicant);
  • Background check through Washington State Patrol, as required by RCW 43.43.830.; and
  • Completion of Safe Schools Web‑Based Training at hire and annually thereafter;
  • Effective oral and written communication in English, including correct grammar and spelling;
  • Ability to learn and apply new skills;
  • Skills in organization and time management;
  • Ability to show flexibility and good judgment;
  • Ability to interact positively and confidentially with individuals from diverse linguistic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds;
  • Ability to successfully implement educational programs and manage student behavior with direction from certificated staff;
  • Ability to maintain composure in high‑stress situations where students may exhibit aggression, non‑compliance, and other conduct problems;
  • Willingness to complete training on restraint and/or de‑escalation as required for the position;
  • Ability to work effectively and collegially with staff, community and students;
  • Physical ability to walk, sit, squat, crawl, kneel, bend, stoop, reach and lift to attend to the physical needs of the students – lift up to approximately 40 pounds and carry up to 30 pounds occasionally and up to 10 pounds regularly.
Additional Skills

Bilingual/biliterate in Spanish is considered helpful. District will test to verify skill levels.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Administers tests, homework assignments, make‑up work, etc., to support certificated staff in the instructional process.
  • Assists students individually or in groups with lesson assignments (reading, math activities, etc.) to practice and reinforce learning concepts and assist students in reaching academic goals and IEP goals.
  • Attends functions as assigned (meetings, in‑service presentations, trainings, etc.) to acquire and/or apply information relative to job functions.
  • Confers with certificated staff as required for input on student progress evaluation and/or implementation/modification of student objectives.
  • Guides students in independent study (enrichment, remedial work, etc.) to ensure student success.
  • Under supervision of assigned staff, implements instructional programs and lesson plans provided by certificated staff.
  • Maintains classroom resources, work area, student files/records (adapting instructional materials, audiovisual equipment, bulletin boards, etc.) to ensure availability of items and accurate information.
