Description
The Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas A&M University invites applications for an Instructional Assistant Professor position. We seek a dedicated professional to lead the department's ongoing federal compliance efforts under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).
This full‑time, 9‑month, non‑tenure‑track faculty appointment begins August 1, 2026. It is an ongoing academic professional track position subject to annual review, with renewal based on demonstrated effectiveness in assigned duties.
The successful candidate will teach a 3-3 course load, including undergraduate courses in Anthropology, Archaeology, and/or Museum Studies, and will lead NAGPRA compliance through proactive engagement and sustained relationship‑building with Native Nations and descendant communities.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must hold a postgraduate degree-a PhD in Anthropology, Native American Studies, Museum Studies, or any closely related discipline, or a JD (with specialization in Indigenous Law) and significant teaching experience at the College level in Anthropology or in a related field. Candidates who have completed all Ph.D. requirements except the dissertation (ABD) will be considered, provided they demonstrate clear progress toward completion.
Candidates must also demonstrate experience building respectful relationships with Native Nations; possess an understanding of NAGPRA and other federal, state, and Tribal cultural resource laws; and have the ability to teach relevant undergraduate courses.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred applicants will hold a PhD and have experience working with collections and archival records, particularly those documenting the material culture of Texas and surrounding states. Additional preferred qualifications include knowledge of standard archaeological field practices and documentation; an interest in cultural sovereignty, heritage protection, and historic preservation; and prior teaching experience with the ability to offer related graduate-level courses.
