Primary
Purpose:
Maintain a strong line of communication between the school campus and transportation department. Assist and support drivers in effective handling of discipline and referrals to have an effective student bus riding safety program.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- High school diploma or GED
- Class B CDL License with P&S endorsements with an acceptable motor vehicle record as determined by the Department of Transportation and the Texas Education Agency. (Motor vehicle records will be reviewed annually to ensure compliance with DOT and TEA standards.)
- Texas School Bus Driver Safety Training Certificate
- Must be certified or willing to obtain certification by the Texas Association of Pupil Transportation (TAPT) as a Pupil Transportation Official, Supervisor, or Specialist.
- Clean Driving Record
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Course (CPR)
Special Knowledge/
Skills:
- Ability to work effectively with campus principals, staff, students, and parents
- Knowledge of bus rules, student handbook/student code of conduct and Board policy
- Excellent interpersonal skills and well-developed written and verbal communication skills
- Basic math skills, detail orientation, mapping and routing skills
- Computer literate, preferably in word processing and Excel
- Knowledge and or ability to learn eSchool
- Reading, ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written)
Experience:
- 2 years’ bus driving experience preferred
Major
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Acts as the main point of contact for concerns regarding student management issues and/or procedures.
- Exercises student management through effective and professional communication.
- Prepares training materials and leads training for transportation staff as it relates to handling student discipline matters.
- Provides guidance to drivers and bus assistants utilizing board policy, student code of conduct, transportation handbook and school bus rules.
- Investigates student behavior and discipline incidents in a timely and efficient manner reporting results and recommendations to the Director and/or campus administration.
- Models handling of student behavior issues for drivers and monitors as needed.
- Reviews student behavior reports to ensure quality of reports by drivers.
- Conducts conferences with campus administration, parents, students, and drivers on disciplinary issues.
- Works with administration on campuses to ensure proper disciplinary action.
- Reports any difficulties or changes in student needs to the Director.
- Maintains a professional and cooperative attitude with fellow employees, supervisors, students, parents, and school personnel, always promoting teamwork.
- Perform other routine work within the department as needed to ensure smooth and efficient daily operations.
- Encourages attendance at all assigned training, safety workshops and field in-service training.
- Attends professional development activities/programs to keep abreast of developments and innovations in the area of transportation.
- Substitute for absentee drivers as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation.

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)
Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, noise, vibration; exposure to chemical hazards; work around vehicles and machinery with moving parts; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; frequent district wide travel; occasional statewide travel
