Job Title: Instructional Assistant, SpEd CASL

Reports to: SPED Coordinator

Dept/Campus: Special Services

Pay Grade: Paraprofessional – PG 3

Wage Status: Non-Exempt

Primary

Purpose:

Help special education teacher provide for physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a special education setting. Assist in implementation of classroom programs including behavior management, crisis intervention, and instructional programs. Works under general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of certified teacher.

Qualifications

Education / Certification:

  • High School Diploma

Special Knowledge /

Skills:

  • Ability to work with children with disabilities
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Required participation in district provided crisis intervention training
  • Required participation in district provided behavior management training

Experience:

  • Some experience working with children
  • Some experience in implementing instructional strategies and behavior intervention plans
Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Assist teacher in maintaining a safe, secure learning environment.
  • Assist teacher in implementation of behavior intervention plan and IEP goals.
  • Help manage behavior of students, including intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous behavior as needed.
  • Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  • Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom (e.g., lunchroom, bus, playground duty).
  • Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
  • Assist students with physical needs and personal care, including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.
  • Assist teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
  • Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
  • Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities expected for this position.

Equipment Used

Personal computer, copier, fax machine, calculator, telephone, electronic mobile devices, projector, video display monitor, and classroom or adaptive equipment.

Working Conditions

Regularly sit, talk or hear; frequently use hands; repetitive hand motions; prolonged use of computer; occasionally lift or move up to 10-50 pounds; stand, walk, reach with hands and arms; vision requirements include close and color vision; frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; moderate noise level; work with ambulatory students; move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment;

stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling; occasional exposure to biohazardous waste and communicable diseases; predictability and regular attendance expected.
