What We Want

The Academic Advisor I, with assistance, is responsible for driving engagement and empowering students to achieve their academic and career goals. This position will play a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention by building relationships with students and clarifying procedures and academic requirements for specific programs or majors.

Responsibilities
  • Advises students: collaborates with students to understand and develop realistic and attainable educational and academic goals and provides input on related majors, minors, future education and career options that best align with goals.
  • Educates students about and assists them with registration, add/drop, Q drops, withdrawals, change of curriculum submissions, and other academic processes by sharing university and college policies, program requirements, and transfer credit decisions.
  • Reviews students’ academic records and counsels students regarding core and degree course selection and the implications of selected courses and/or exception requests; provides input on probationary decisions.
  • Creates and maintains updated records and notes (student contact, advisor notes).
  • Delivers student success and retention strategies: consistently engages the student population using in-person and online outreach methods to keep students informed of critical and relevant personal, academic and professional deadlines and events.
  • Proactively shares available academic, professional, and health and wellness resources (Academic Success Center, Career Center, Student Organizations, Counseling & Psychological Services, Disability Resources, etc.) and may refer students with identified needs as appropriate.
  • Actively monitors student progress through the program by reviewing and assessing academic records to determine status of progression, completion of degree requirements, and identifying and referring those who may require additional intervention.
  • Assists in planning and delivery of department‑related advising, student success, retention events and academic campaigns.
  • Assesses individual student’ stage of academic development and promotes growth by determining suitable developmental tasks.
  • Training: up to 20% of the year is dedicated to in-class and on‑the‑job training programs (e.g., shadowing, departmental/college/school trainings, university trainings, advisor meetings, staff meetings).
  • Work beyond normal office hours and/or weekends may be required. Travel may be required.
Qualifications
  • Education:

    Bachelor’s degree (no required experience).
  • Proficiency level of novice in initiating, building, and maintaining effective relationships; communicating clearly and concisely to appropriate audiences; researching information to meet situation parameters; collaborating with others; actively listening; organizing, prioritizing, and working effectively to meet goals.
  • Proficiency level of advanced beginner in using various computer programs (word processing, spreadsheets, database applications) and working with confidential information.
  • Preferred: TAMU graduate from the College of Education and Human Development; knowledge of student development in higher education; ability to lead students in developing education and personal goals.
