Position Overview

The Academic Advisor II P10 drives engagement and empowers students to achieve their academic and career goals. This position plays a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention by building relationships with students and clarifying procedures and academic requirements for specific programs or majors.

Salary and Location/Schedule

Salary:
Will be commensurate based on the selected hire’s education and experience.

Location:

College Station, TX. Full‑Time;
Works to cover shifts, or take emergency call, on evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with students to develop realistic and attainable educational and academic goals and provide guidance on majors, minors, future education and career options.
  • Educate students about and assist them with academic processes (registration, add/drop, Q drops, withdrawals, change of curriculum submissions, etc.) by sharing university and college policies, program requirements, transfer credit decisions, and more.
  • Review student records and counsel on core and degree course selection, including implications of selected courses and exception requests.
  • Provide input on probationary decisions.
  • Maintain updated records and notes (e.g., student contact, advisor notes).
  • Engage the student population using outreach methods to keep them informed of deadlines, updates, information and events.
  • Share academic, professional, and wellness resources; refer students with identified needs as appropriate.
  • Monitor student progress by reviewing academic records to determine status of progression and completion of degree requirements, identifying those needing additional intervention.
  • Lead planning and delivery of advising, student success, retention events and academic campaigns.
  • Assess individual students’ stage of academic development and promote growth by determining suitable developmental tasks.
  • Assist in training and sharing information for new staff members and student workers within the advising department.
  • Allocate up to 10% of time for training and development per year.
Required

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Two years of advising or related experience.

  • Professional standards and ethical guidelines for academic advising.
  • Expected student learning and success outcomes of academic advising.
  • Curriculum, degree programs, and academic requirements and options, including changes and revisions.
  • Critical partners for academic advisors and their role in the advising process.
  • Campus and community resources that support student success.
  • Project management principles and processes.
  • Professional standards and ethical guidelines for coaching and methods to evaluate coaching effectiveness.
Proficiency Levels Novice
  • Discussing and referring students to appropriate campus resources for mental health issues.
  • Conducting research and developing and delivering training, including advising tools and strategies, campus resources, and relevant updates for faculty and staff.
  • Supervising student employees to assist with administrative advising duties and programming.
