Job Description

The Academic Advisor II, with minimal assistance, drives engagement and empowers students to achieve their academic and career goals. This position will play a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention by building relationships with students and clarifying procedures and academic requirements for specific programs or majors.

Bachelor’s degree and 2years of advising or related experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of NACADA’s Core Values of Academic Advising, relevant theories, advising models, professional standards, and ethical guidelines.
  • Knowledge of academic advising outcomes, curriculum, degree programs, academic requirements, and changes over time.
  • Knowledge of critical partners for academic advisers and their roles, campus and community resources, project management principles, coaching standards, and evaluation methods.
  • Skill:
    Discussing and referring students to appropriate campus resources for mental health issues.
  • Skill:
    Conducting research and developing and delivering training on advising tools, campus resources, and updates for faculty and staff.
  • Skill:
    Supervising student employees to assist with administrative advising duties and programming.
  • Proficient in articulating a personal philosophy of academic advising, communicating respectfully and confidentially, promoting student understanding of curriculum expectations, facilitating problem‑solving, decision‑making, and meaning‑making, identifying high‑risk indicators, engaging in ongoing assessment, planning and delivering department‑related advising events, and demonstrating high ethical standards.
  • Proficient in creating rapport and building relationships, guiding, coaching, and mentoring students, collaborating with partners, planning advising interactions, connecting students to resources, facilitating planning and goal setting, observing and identifying trends through data review, and using advising technologies to support students.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Texas A&M University’s history, mission, vision, values, culture, and policies relevant to advising.
  • Knowledge of the legal guidelines of advising practice, privacy regulations, and confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of the characteristics, needs, and experiences of major and emerging student populations and of resources and effective responses to mental health issues.
  • Knowledge of applicable information technology and training methods for designing and delivering instructional content relevant to advising outcomes.
  • Skill:
    Conducting research and developing and delivering training on academic advising topics.
Responsibilities
  • Advise students: work with students to understand and develop realistic academic goals, provide input on majors, minors, and career options.
  • Educate students about academic processes such as registration, add/drop, Q drops, withdrawals, and curriculum submissions.
  • Review academic records and counsel on core and degree course selection and exception requests.
  • Provide input on probationary decisions and maintain updated records and notes.
  • Deliver Student Success and Retention Strategies: engage students through in‑person and online outreach, share resources (Academic Success Center, Career Center, Counseling, Disability Resources, etc.), refer students with identified needs, and monitor progress to recommend interventions.
  • Lead planning and delivery of department advising, student success, retention events and academic campaigns.
  • Assess individual student development stages and promote growth through suitable tasks.
  • Assist in training and sharing information for new staff and student workers.
  • Complete up to 10% training and development per year through in‑class and on‑job programs, including onboarding and advanced advising training.
