A Glimpse of the Job

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist I, under general supervision, provides specialized knowledge in the operation and support of an assigned area within an environmental health and safety program.

• Performs oversight for TAMU’s environmental compliance with Clean Air Act (CAA)
• Provides verbal and written interpretations of Federal, State, and Local environmental laws, regulations, programs, and agreements to faculty, staff, and students
• Assists with compliance recommendations and explanations of program procedures and regulatory requirements to faculty, staff, students, and contractors on behalf of Environmental Health and Safety
• Conducts air audits and visible emission checks as needed

• Assists with oversight for TAMU's environmental compliance with Clean Water Act (CWA), Clean Air Act (CAA) and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)
• Assists in developing plans and implementing programs and training that ensure compliance with Federal and State regulatory requirements
• Submits or assists in preparing appropriate reports, permit applications, and/or inspection results as required by the regulations

• Prepares and conducts monthly emergency response trainings
• Conducts training and/or develops training aids in a specialized area
• Participates in training and development opportunities

• Prepares annual air reports and permitting

• Responds with other EHS personnel to chemical spills or hazardous waste emergencies with university spill vehicle
• Assists with maintaining equipment involved in emergency response

Salary: $21.73/hour

• Associate degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Two years of experience in an environmental health and safety or related field

• Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training
• Training or experience related to Clean Air Act, Air Quality and Monitoring, and/or Texas Air Permitting
• Visible Emissions Reader Certificate
• May require a Class “C” vehicle operator’s license

• Working knowledge of environmental, safety, and health rules, regulations, and standards
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work independently
• Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

• Ability to maintain the security and integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment system or water treatment system
• This position is security sensitive
• This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TAMU policies, regulations, rules and procedures
• All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and University safety requirements
