Overview

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist I works under general supervision to provide specialized knowledge in the operation and support of the department’s environmental health and safety program. The role focuses on inspections, audits, compliance, reporting and emergency response across the Texas A&M University system.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct routine inspections and audits in various functional areas, often requiring use of a university vehicle.
  • Perform construction and semi‑annual infrastructure inspections to ensure compliance with the TAMU Stormwater Management Plan (SWMP) and state/federal stormwater rules.
  • Audit wastewater and water distribution systems for compliance.
  • Identify hazards and conduct risk assessments.
  • Provide verbal and written interpretations of federal, state, and local environmental laws, regulations, programs and agreements to faculty, staff, students and contractors.
  • Assist in developing programs and public outreach campaigns for stormwater compliance, including social media and training initiatives.
  • Prepare and submit reports, permit applications, inspection results, and other documentation required by regulations.
  • Oversee environmental compliance with the Clean Water Act (CWA), Clean Air Act (CAA), and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).
  • Support implementation of an environmental management system to maintain departmental compliance standards.
  • Maintain emergency response equipment and support emergency responders during incidents.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum two years of experience in environmental health and safety or a related field.
  • Class “C” vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain it within 30 days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Stormwater Inspector.
  • Hazardous waste operations and emergency response training.
  • Knowledge of Clean Water Act permitting processes, including TPDES.
Skills & Abilities
  • Working knowledge of environmental, safety, and health regulations.
  • Proficiency with word‑processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, multitask, and collaborate with others.
Physical Requirements

Tolerance for moderate exposure to extreme temperatures, dust, dirt, fumes, smoke, loud noises, and chemical substances.

Security & Compliance

The position requires maintaining the security and integrity of critical infrastructure, including communication systems, computer networks, cybersecurity, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment, or water treatment systems. The role is security sensitive and must comply with state and federal laws, the Texas A&M University System, and TAMU policies, regulations, rules, and procedures.
