Under supervision of the Long Range Planning Administrator, the Long Range Planning intern will assist with a variety of planning and development projects, providing research, analysis, and support for long-term community growth initiatives. The intern will gain hands-on experience implementing the City's Comprehensive Plan, small area plans, and other strategic planning projects while contributing to public engagement efforts, reporting, and data presentation.
This role provides a unique opportunity to observe and participate in municipal planning processes and develop professional skills in urban planning and community development.
Professional development benefits of the internship program include the ability to access additional assessments and resources to enhance self-awareness and professional development, participate in tours and discussions with key departments to learn about their roles, as well as attend a city council meeting (or view via Channel 19) to obtain knowledge of the decision-making processes of local government and the role of the department in supporting city-wide policies and initiatives.
* Assist with the implementation and tracking of the City's Comprehensive Plan, small area plans, and other long-range planning initiatives.
* Participate in the preparation of planning-related reports, studies, research projects, and presentations, including data analysis and visualization.
* Support public engagement and outreach efforts, including facilitating meetings, workshops, and virtual engagement opportunities to promote education and awareness about urban planning and community development.
* Provide information and guidance to internal and external stakeholders regarding city planning policies, growth trends, and development initiatives.
* Collaborate with city staff on planning projects, contributing research, recommendations, and support for project deliverables
* Perform other duties as assigned.
Required:
* Currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program in urban planning, urban design, architecture, or a related field.
* Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly.
* Ability to comprehend and apply multiple ordinances, policies, and planning regulations.
* Ability to exercise good judgment, tact, and diplomacy in all public and professional interactions.
Preferred:
* Bachelor's Degree in urban planning, urban design, architecture, or a related field or related field.
* Familiarity with municipal planning processes, GIS software, or urban design tools.
* Experience or coursework in public engagement, community development, or project research.
Hours:
30-40 hours/week;
