Job Description

The Texas A&M High Performance Research Computing (HPRC) is an interdisciplinary research center that supports AI, HPC, and data‑enabled science. The Director will oversee the HPRC research and user services effort, maintain high‑quality user experience for faculty and researchers at Texas A&M and nationally, build and develop research collaborations, and enable computational projects across campus. The role also involves researching and evaluating emerging technologies, representing HPRC at national events, and managing the User Services and Visualization Services.

Responsibilities
  • Provide consultation and support to faculty, staff, and students in scientific software and HPC technologies.
  • Lead and participate in research projects as PI or Co‑PI funded by NSF, TWC, NSA, and other agencies.
  • Develop proposals and research collaborations.
  • Interface with faculty to identify HPC needs and devise solutions.
  • Build strong research collaborations regionally and nationally.
  • Enable computational projects using HPRC systems.
  • Consult on future HPC and data science needs within research community.
  • Lead HPRC training programs and produce technical publications.
  • Direct User Services and Visualization Services, ensuring helpdesk, portal, and websites run correctly.
  • Develop and implement evaluation techniques for program activities.
  • Assist in strategic operations, planning, and budget recommendations for HPRC clusters and IT infrastructure.
  • Introduce new researchers, provide ticket support, and document web resources.
  • Daily operations oversight for User Services.
  • Identify new software, hardware, and techniques.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and regulations.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related science/engineering field.
  • Ten years of progressively responsible management experience in research computing or computational sciences, with at least three years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience using HPC systems, distributed computing technologies, and computational methods.
  • Experience with NSF‑funded or other major national or international HPC systems such as ACCESS.
  • Strong analytical, computational, project, and team management skills.
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain professional working relationships and multitask cooperatively.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in a relevant science or engineering discipline.
  • Five years of experience managing large HPC projects and user support staff.
  • Knowledge of resource management systems such as SLURM, PBS, and Moab.
  • Experience with multiple compilers on various platforms.
  • Experience with HPC usage at universities and national HPC centers.
  • Experience building, optimizing, and supporting scientific libraries and codes for HPC.
  • Research using HPC and cloud computing resources for modeling and simulation.
  • Proven track record of writing proposals and securing research grants.
Other Requirements and Factors
  • Ability to move light, medium, or heavy objects such as training materials.
  • Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving and/or flying on commercial airlines.
  • Security‑sensitive position requiring compliance with state and federal laws, and university policies.
