Position: Network Engineer I

Overview

The Network Engineer I performs routine network engineering functions.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with network design activities under guidance of senior network engineers.
  • Analyze, troubleshoot, track, and repair data communications networks.
  • Establish contacts with vendors for networking support and problem resolution.
  • Consult with clients to define networking requirements.
  • Implement tests used to certify network to required installation design standards.
  • Assist with new technology deployments and integration testing.
  • Document network engineering designs, plans, maps, methods, and procedures.
  • Review accuracy of documentation, document problems and repairs.
  • Produce reports and summaries for management and users.
  • Provide input for planning and budget process.
  • Maintain accurate records of technology configurations, event setup checklists, and post‑event issue logs.
  • Participate in training and professional development sessions.
  • Assist employees in resolving technical issues.
  • Provide on‑call support on nights and weekends as needed.
  • Complete small projects under guidance from senior engineers.
  • Confer with project management and vendors to produce bills of materials.
  • Participate in change management and problem tracking.
  • Ensure work accuracy and compliance with departmental quality standards.
  • Support technology infrastructure for Athletics venues and event spaces.
  • Perform pre‑event technology readiness checks at Athletics facilities.
  • Coordinate with event management, broadcast partners, and vendors for network and AV system requirements.
  • Assist configuration and deployment of event‑specific network infrastructure.
  • Support post‑event technology assessments and issue documentation.
  • Assist in maintenance and monitoring of surveillance and access control systems.
Required

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience; at least two years of networking design experience.

  • Network deployment and administration experience; hands‑on support for complex network environments.
  • Ability to perform effectively in high‑pressure situations with sound judgment and timely decision‑making.
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to high‑quality performance.
  • Proven leadership potential and ability to guide and mentor others.
  • Openness to learning and adaptability to new technologies and processes.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Knowledge of advanced IT and ITIL principles.
  • Intermediate troubleshooting skills and client relations.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of project management, mentoring, negotiation, vendor relations, proposal writing, business acumen, persuasive communication, adaptability to change, team leadership, and quality assurance methodologies.
  • CompTIA Network+, CCNA, or CCNP (preferred).
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments and elevated areas.
Other Requirements and Factors
  • Maintain security and integrity of critical infrastructure (communications, networks, cybersecurity, electrical grid, hazardous waste or water treatment).
  • Works outside standard office hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Position is security sensitive and requires compliance with state, federal laws, and university regulations.
  • All tasks performed safely according to safety requirements.
Compensation

$59,000 annually.
