Job Title

Diagnostic Technician – Necropsy Agency

Job Description Summary

The Diagnostic Technician, under general supervision, assists with necropsy procedures, collects and prepares samples, performs assays, and records and reports results for various diagnostic specimens. Responsibilities include dissection of animal carcasses and tissues, routine maintenance of equipment, and proper disposal of biohazard waste.

Responsibilities
  • Sample Preparation and Cataloging: retrieve and accession samples, enter data into TVMDL’s laboratory information management system (LIMS), and ensure samples are fit for testing.
  • Testing Support: assist the duty pathologist with tissue collection on necropsies, generate forms and documentation, and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Data Entry and Interpretation: read, compute, and record observations and results into LIMS, ensuring quality assurance documentation is complete.
  • Client Communication: provide basic testing information and clarify test requests.
  • Quality Assurance & Safety: adhere to QA programs, identify nonconformance, and participate in safety programs.
  • Documentation Review: verify clarity of instructions for entry‑level technicians.
  • Research and Development Support: assist in cataloging reference materials and researching new test methods.
  • Supply and Inventory Management: catalog incoming supplies, track inventory levels, and coordinate equipment repairs.
  • Administrative Tasks: file, copy, and scan paperwork, maintain logbooks, and prepare regulatory forms.
  • Training and Mentorship: cross‑train with other technicians, provide backup coverage, and help train new employees.
  • Teamwork and Cooperation: foster laboratory teamwork, cooperation, and professional communication.
  • Other Duties: perform work in compliance with federal, state, Texas A&M University System, and TVMDL safety rules.
Additional Position Details
  • Work on site during normal business hours, Monday‑Friday 8am‑5pm, with occasional weekend flexibility.
  • Must complete a pre‑exposure rabies vaccination series; cost covered by TVMDL.
  • Vehicle operation required; parking permits provided by TAMU.
  • Equipment must be operated safely in accordance with TAMUS, Agri Life, and local regulations.
Qualifications
  • Required

    Education and Experience:

    High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Required

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Knowledge of laboratory equipment and computer systems, attention to detail, multitasking, and strong verbal and written communication.
  • Preferred

    Education and Experience:

    Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience; two years of related experience; experience in a veterinary hospital or clinic, necropsy, or laboratory settings; basic knowledge of mammalian and/or avian anatomy; ability to lift 50lb.
  • Registrations, Certifications and Licenses: Valid Texas motor vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30days of employment.
