Who Are WeThe Texas Department of Agriculture’s (TDA) Agriculture Consumer Protection Division administers consumer protection programs which includes overseeing items such as grocery store scales, egg quality, nursery products, licensing and training pesticide applicators, worker protection and registering pesticides for sale. TDA’s consumer protection efforts promote success, unity and prosperity for the people of Texas.
What You’ll DoThe Chemist position will perform routine/moderately complex professional chemical work in the pesticide residue laboratory of the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA), including research and methodology development, to contribute to the analysis of pesticide residues for monitoring and to aid in the agency’s prosecution of pesticide law violations. Work under moderate/general supervision with limited/moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
PrimaryResponsibilities
- Perform routine professional chemical work in the pesticide residue laboratory in compliance with established scientific standards.
- Assist in conducting extractions and testing of various agricultural commodities and materials for pesticide residues or other analytes.
- Prepare technical reports documenting the results of analyses.
- Complete routine and preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment.
- Assist in the operation of the Lab Data System.
- Use technical resources for self‑improvement and for enhancing laboratory operations.
- Complete research and methodology development for difficult or unique pesticide residues or other analytes.
- May troubleshoot and repair instrumentation.
- Assist in training new chemists and other lab personnel when necessary.
- Follow all TDA policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Perform routine to complex professional chemical work in the pesticide residue laboratory in compliance with established scientific standards.
- Complete routine and preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment with the ability to troubleshoot and repair instrumentation.

- Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry or a related field (one year of work experience related to the essential duties may substitute for one year of college).

- Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry or a related field (one year of work experience related to the essential duties may substitute for one year of college).
- Work experience as a chemist performing the physical testing and chemical analysis of materials and products.
- Experience conducting special research projects and preparing appropriate technical reports on pesticide residues or other analytes.
- Knowledge of the principles of chemical processes and analyses; of Quality Assurance/Quality Control and good laboratory practices; and of the principles and techniques of quantitative chemical laboratory tests, especially Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) and/or Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS).
