Description

Under the direction of the Operations Supervisor, the Equipment Operator works as a member of a crew, operating a variety of construction equipment routinely used in maintenance projects in streets and drainage. The Equipment Operator II differs from the base role by requiring additional years of experience at the journeyman level, CDL class, types of equipment operated, and the ability to serve as a lead worker.

Responsibilities

Equipment Operator I

  • Operate a variety of light to heavy equipment (e.g., 7-yard dump truck, skid steer, small rollers, tractor shredder, backhoe tractor) used in street and drainage construction and maintenance.
  • Inspect and maintain equipment daily, perform preventative minor repairs, and coordinate maintenance with appropriate departments.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of supplies, materials, and equipment to complete work assignments efficiently.
  • Assist in disaster events (e.g., setting barricades, sand bridges, checking barricades, cutting/removing debris, resetting traffic signs, clearing obstructions, containing non-hazardous spills, patching sinkholes, setting detours).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Equipment Operator II

  • Perform highly skilled construction and maintenance work, including operating heavy equipment such as vacuum trailer, bulldozer, street sweeper, loader, track hoe, haul truck, water truck, ice rock/sand spreader, patch truck, boom-mower, milling machine, or menzi muck excavator.
  • Support street and drainage maintenance by operating heavy equipment for temporary and permanent asphalt repair, cutting, filling, milling, sweeping, laying and compacting material, and excavation/ grading work.
  • Operate and maintain auxiliary mechanical equipment, electronics, and attachments used with heavy construction equipment.
  • Assist with training co-workers as needed and perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Valid CDL "B" license (or ability to obtain within 90 days) and maintain it.
  • Knowledge of the Texas Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD).
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Willingness and availability for emergency response and on-call duties.
Equipment Operator II – Additional Requirements
  • Two (2) years additional technical training in a related field and two (2) years of related experience, or an equivalent combination.
  • Valid CDL "A" license issued by the State of Texas.
Physical Requirements

Continuous outdoor activity, frequent sitting, standing, walking, squatting, bending, twisting upper body, climbing, exposure to extreme heat, cold, noise, mechanical hazards, fume/odor hazards, toxic waste/material hazards, occasional kneeling, crawling, carrying up to ninety (90) pounds, lifting up to ninety (90) pounds.

Drug Screening

Due to the safety and/or security sensitive nature of this position, individuals shall be subject to pre-employment or pre-placement drug and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy.
