Automotive Technician II

Agency: Texas A&M University Department Transportation Services
Location: College Station, Texas
Salary: $25.30 per hour (proposed minimum)

Job Overview

Under general supervision, the Automotive Technician II performs skilled maintenance and repair operations on light/medium duty vehicles and equipment. The role may also assist in directing the work of other technicians and helpers.

Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections, complete and update manual and computerized service orders, and carry out general maintenance and repair of light/medium duty vehicles and equipment.
  • Replace parts such as exhaust systems, batteries, belts, hoses, etc., and install and program controllers.
  • Use diagnostic tools to identify and troubleshoot engine, transmission, electrical, HVAC, and aftertreatment issues.
  • Maintain a clean, clutter‑free shop area and utilize computers to access maintenance specifications, administer fleet‑wide maintenance programs, and submit parts requests.
  • Drive DOT‑regulated vehicles for test driving, recovery of disabled vehicles, delivery of vehicles, and other related tasks.
  • Adhere to all safety requirements, state and federal laws, and university policies and regulations.
Physical Requirements
  • Lift and move heavy objects; lift, carry, stoop, kneel, climb, push, pull, and walk frequently.
  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions, potential allergens, elevated noise levels, and heat.
  • Stand for extended periods; drive on campus and occasionally travel to multiple locations.
Qualifications
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience: Four years of related experience in repair and maintenance of gasoline‑engine vehicles and equipment.
  • Required Licenses and

    Certifications:

    Valid driver’s license with a good driving record; ability to obtain a Texas state Class “B” vehicle operator license (Commercial Driver’s License with passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement) within 60 days of employment.
  • Ability to work independently, multitask, and collaborate with others.
  • Significant understanding of light/medium duty vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Proficiency with maintenance software, shop tools, and equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Trade school or automotive/diesel background.
  • Commercial vehicle operator license with passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement.
  • Three or more ASE certifications in related specialties or equivalent OEM certifications.
  • Supervisory experience.

Working Hours & Additional Requirements

Standard hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with possible overtime, weekends, and special events such as Saturday football games. The position is security‑sensitive and may require random drug and alcohol testing and compliance with disaster response protocols.
