Position: Principal Scientist, (NMR Spectroscopist)

Job Summary

GSK has an immediate opening for an NMR spectroscopist in research and development at our site in Collegeville, PA. The position is part of the NMR team accountable for all NMR applications in support of drug discovery and development from lead identification to marketing authorization applications.

The NMR team is responsible for the structural characterization of new chemical entities, synthetic intermediates, impurities, degradants, and the characterization of physical form with solid state NMR. The team also develops NMR methodology for novel applications in biologics and maintains seven NMR instruments ranging from 400 MHz to 700 MHz, including solid state NMR capability, and five walk‑up NMRs for use within Medicinal Chemistry and Process Chemistry groups.

The NMR team sits within a broader, multi‑disciplinary analytical group responsible for structural characterization of small molecule synthetic drugs and biologics such as monoclonal antibodies by mass spectrometry, spectroscopy, and other biophysical techniques, as well as stress testing and forced degradation studies. Our group supports the development of innovative and quality medicines for patients through cutting‑edge analytical science.

Responsibilities

The NMR team is accountable for all NMR applications supporting drug discovery and development.

Responsibilities include:

  • Structural characterization of new chemical entities, synthetic intermediates, impurities, and degradants.
  • Characterization of physical form with solid state NMR.
  • Development of NMR methodology for novel biologics applications.
  • Maintenance of NMR laboratory hardware and software, including cryoprobes, solid state and low field systems.
  • Authoring reports and regulatory dossiers.
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in NMR spectroscopy or related area (or Master’s degree with equivalent experience).
  • Experience with solution phase NMR experiments, including 1D, 2D, and heteronuclear NMR techniques for structural characterization.
  • Experience with NMR instrumentation hardware and software, including cryoprobes and solid state NMR.
  • Experience building and maintaining a state‑of‑the‑art NMR laboratory.
  • Two or more years of experience as primary or contributing author of reports and regulatory dossiers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ≥ 5 years’ experience in the field (or a Master’s degree with ≥ 10 years).
  • Demonstrated expertise in modern NMR pulse sequence programming and AU/macro programming on Bruker spectrometers.
  • Experience in structure elucidation software such as ACD for NMR.
  • Ability to comply with the requirements of quality, safety and GSK policies and ensure protection of intellectual property.
