Job Summary
A bus monitor is a person who, generally under the direction of a bus driver, rides in a van or bus over designated routes transporting school pupils or clients to and from school or other designated locations. In addition, a bus monitor may ride a bus or van to assist and monitor clients on private charter trips. Bus monitors may work with loud and disruptive clients and with special‑needs individuals.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Monitor pupils and daily school bus activities to ensure proper conduct and adherence to safe standards.
- Maintain attendance and ridership records and assign seating, as necessary, to ensure good student behavior.
- Observe and learn established bus routes so substitute drivers can receive directional and routing assistance.
- As requested by the Operations Manager or Dispatcher, verify route turn‑by‑turn sheets and note any route changes with written notes.
- Make additional directional or landmark notations on bus route sheets to assist future drivers.
- Track route timing (total time on route, time between stops, loading and unloading times, etc.) to establish route efficiency.
- Ensure safe loading and unloading of students on and off the bus.
- Verify student use of seat belts and assist with securing or removing belts.
- Assist bus driver with sweeping and cleaning the bus interior.
- Establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with bus drivers, district personnel, students, and parents.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.

- Comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.

- Communicate clearly with students, drivers, school officials, and parents.
- Work outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, cold, wet, humid).
- Operate in a moderately loud work environment.
- Attend work regularly and dependably.
- Successfully pass state and/or federal required background checks.
- Perform the essential functions of the job.
- Comply with all policies and procedures established by the company.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving history.
- Certificate of training in first aid and CPR, if required by local contract.
- A first aid endorsement of the special driver’s certificate or a certificate of training in first aid and CPR, if required by local contract.
- Getting on and off the vehicle to assist challenged riders.
- Walking in parking lots, aisles on board the bus, and around the vehicle for daily inspections.
- Closing doors, pushing wheelchairs, opening emergency doors, and operating equipment like opening and closing windows.
- Operating hand and foot controls, checking bus fluids, securing themselves correctly in the factory‑installed driver’s seat belt unassisted, turning the steering wheel, and shifting the transmission.
- Driving a bus and announcing streets, talking with passengers, or speaking on the radio.
- Keeping aware of general traffic conditions, stopped vehicles, traffic signals, viewing color or traffic lights, inspecting the vehicle, and monitoring passengers.
- Listening to traffic sounds, emergency vehicles, passenger inquiries, monitoring the radio, and detecting mechanical problems.
- Stooping and stretching.
- Picking up and securing young or challenged passengers, securing wheelchairs, inspecting under the bus.
- Supervising passenger boarding and exiting, operating lift controls, lifting challenged passengers into their seats, and assisting passengers in an emergency to evacuate the bus.
- Lifting the hood to perform pre‑trip inspection and installation of tire chains.
- Assisting students in simulated and real emergency evacuation situations.
- General physical description of tasks related to the role.
